Brentford’s Ivan Toney apologises for social media video

Brentford’s Ivan Toney has apologised after a social media video appeared to show the striker using an expletive in reference to the club.

Toney, who is thought to be on holiday in Dubai, can be seen saying the f-word then “Brentford” in the clip, repeating the two-word phrase used by the woman who was filming.

Brentford had said they were “aware of the video” and were “investigating”.

“I am aware of a video of me that was published on social media,” Toney said.

“In it I used language that was unacceptable. The video was cut short and edited but I have to accept the impact this has had and realise I should not have put myself in that position.”

The 25-year-old has scored six goals for the Bees in their Premier League campaign so far.

The London side have suffered six defeats in their last seven top-flight matches after a fine start to their maiden Premier League campaign.

In his statement on Twitter, Toney also apologised to Brentford fans, adding: “I respect the way you all support the team and I have to say how much I love playing for the club and for you.

“I’ll be back training next week, working hard to score more goals to win us more games for the rest of the season.”

Toney was influential in helping Brentford achieve promotion into the Premier League last season, scoring 33 goals as the club ended a 74-year exile from the top flight.

They are currently in 14th place in the Premier League, eight points above the relegation zone, but have played more games than the teams below them.
