A deadly stampede took place at the entrance to the Olembe stadium where the round of 16 of the CAN was being played between Cameroon and Comoros. The governor of the central region of Cameroon reports an initial death toll of at least six dead, reports Associated Press.

Officials at the nearby Messassi Hospital said they had received at least 40 injured following the crowd movement. “Some of the injured are in desperate condition,” said Olinga Prudence, a nurse, as quoted by AP. “We will have to evacuate them to a specialized hospital. “

About 50,000 people tried to attend this round of 16 between the host country and the Comoros. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000, but due to Covid restrictions it could only be filled to 80%.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) for its part indicated that it had “learned of the incidents that occurred at the Olembe stadium” and that it was going to “investigate the situation in order to obtain more details”.
