Dion celebrated the athletes’ “stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance”

Céline Dion is feeling “so happy” after her grand Eiffel Tower performance at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Canadian star shared a sweet message on social media celebrating the moment as she congratulated the athletes participating in the games.

“I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!” Dion wrote. “Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.”

“All of you have been so focused on your dream, and whether or not you take home a medal, I hope that being here means that it has come true for you!” she continued. “You should all be so proud, we know how hard you have worked to be the best of the best. Stay focused, keep going, my heart is with you!”

During her comeback performance on Friday, Dion belted out Édith Piaf’s famous song, “Hymne à L’amour,” or “The Hymn to Love,” while standing beneath the illumination of the six Olympic rings.

Dion’s showing in Paris was a huge moment for the singer after she shared she was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome in December 2022. Last month, the icon said she would return to the stage despite the symptoms of the neurological condition.

She first teased her plans to return to the stage during an interview on NBC. “I am Celine Dion,” she said. “Because today my voice will be heard for the first time, not just because I have to, or because I need to. Because I want to, and I miss it.”

The opening ceremony also included performances by Lady Gaga performing homage to French cabaret icon Zizi Jeanmaire, rapper Rim’K,  the Théâtre du Chatelet performing a Les Mis rock opera, and more.
