After the coup in the 2-1 home win against Manchester United, there is no point increase for YB in the second group game in the premier class. Atalanta Bergamo are clearly the more dangerous team. The goal was scored by the Italian European Champion Matteo Pessina in the 68th minute.

He is a fan of Atalanta, YB coach David Wagner said before his team’s Champions League game in Bergamo. He followed the path of that club and the work of the trainer Gian Piero Gasperini with interest and fascination. On Wednesday evening, a few meters from Gasperini, Wagner was able to experience first hand in the second half why the comparatively small club has been successfully annoying the Italian club celebrities for a long time.
Because after the break Atalanta increased the pace, the accuracy of the pass and the offensive efforts, the 0-0 did not correspond to the ideas of the favorite. The Young Boys came under heavy pressure and suffered from the impressive pressure of the opponent. There were hardly any relief phases, not even when Wagner condensed the center with substitutions. It took a lot of imagination to be able to imagine that YB will save the 0-0 in these waves of Atalanta over time.
Italian hunters
Reality was stronger than science fiction. In the 68th minute, the strong Duvan Zapata shook off the YB central defender Sandro Lauper, who was too lightweight in this scene, and served Matteo Pessina. The Italian European champions scored the 1-0 for Atalanta and rewarded his team for the energetic assault in the second half.
Without the injured Swiss national player Christian Fassnacht, the Young Boys were unable to respond seriously. Your goalkeeper David von Ballmoos even prevented a significantly higher defeat with several strong interventions.
Atalanta is named after Atalante, a virgin huntress in Greek mythology. And on Wednesday, for the first time in the club’s history, a Champions League home game took place in Bergamo in front of spectators – two years earlier the matches had been held in Milan, last season there were only ghost games. 50 percent of the stadium capacity and thus almost 10,000 spectators were allowed against YB. They made for an atmospheric ambience.
The hosts laid as expected going in the hunter style. After just five minutes, Zapata failed from a few meters from Ballmoos. Soon, however, the Bernese had sorted themselves in the very defensive interpreted 4-3-3 system, they defended in the first half in solidarity and consistently and did not allow many chances. And when the ball was in the YB goal after a little more than a quarter of an hour, the VAR intervened because Atalanta’s captain Rafael Toloi was offside.
Atalanta made the events dominant even before the break, but the Young Boys initially blocked the rooms, but played out the switching situations several times too complicated. Once the fast Meschack Elia managed to launch steeply, but the striker shot just wide of the goal. It remained by far the most dangerous attack by the hesitant Swiss master.
Surprising substitution
After the break, the Young Boys provided only occasional visits from the opposing half. And because David Wagner surprisingly replaced Elia, his clear best offensive player, shortly before conceding the goal, the attacks in the final phase finally lacked penetration and determination. In the surprising 2-1 win at the start of the Champions League against Manchester United, Wagner was still involved with courageous castling in the turn to spectacular success. After the 0: 1 at Atalanta, Wagner said that YB defended passionately: “We are leaving Bergamo with our heads held high.”
Despite the defeat, the starting position for the Young Boys is relatively promising. Now they meet the Spanish representative Villarreal twice, first on October 20th in the Wankdorf Stadium. Then the YB players will have to appear much more brisk again. Because even the Europa League winner Villarreal, as an outsider, annoys larger clubs remarkably efficiently, in Spain and in Europe.
