REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM — Commission V DPR supports the construction of a bridge connecting Batam Island and Bintan Island in the Riau Archipelago to boost the economy of the archipelagic province.
“We see the governor’s exposure, the Riau Islands potential is so big. One thing that can boost the Riau Islands economy is a connecting bridge. Therefore, friends from Commission V of the DPR provide great support for the construction of the bridge,” said Chairman of the Special Visit Team for Commission V DPR RI to Riau Islands, Ridwan Bae, in Batam, Monday (4/10). If the East Java Provincial Government needs to gather 60 members of the Indonesian House of Representatives from their constituency to fight for the construction of the Suramadu Bridge, then for the Batam-Bintan Bridge, more than 50 members of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission V will fight for it, he said. He stated that Commission V of the DPR plans to hold a hearing meeting by presenting the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad along with the regents/mayors involved, and other parties in Jakarta. “The goal is how to make efforts to accelerate this development firmly so that in the next 3-5 years the bridge will be completed,” he said. He hopes that the construction of the bridge can begin in 2022 with a maximum financing period of five years with construction that can be passed. At the same place, Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad welcomed the support from Commission V of the DPR so that the construction of the Batam-Bintan Bridge could be accelerated. He said the bridge had been planned since 2010. It has even been included in the Bappenas green book. However, along with the change of leadership, the draft had sunk. “Thank God yesterday during the President’s visit, we discussed the Batam-Bintan Bridge with a future economic perspective and various things. The President welcomed the construction of the Batam-Bintan Bridge. Alhamdulillah, a few days ago we had a meeting with the Minister of Public Works, and several director generals, and directors to discuss follow up on this,” he said. His party has budgeted around Rp 50 billion to support the construction of the Batam-Bintan Bridge, including land acquisition, bathymetry surveys, and feasibility studies. He targets all preparations to be completed by the end of November 2021 and complete all documents to be submitted to the Ministry of PUPR.
