Compensation for victims of sexual abuse in the Church: “I hope that the faithful will want to help us”

Invited this Wednesday morning on Franceinfo, the archbishop of the diocese of Reims, Mgr Éric de Moulins-Beaufort, president of the Conference of Bishops of France, reacted to the publication of the Sauvé report. He also returned to the issue of compensation for victims, which could be problematic for the finances of the Church.

Edifying figures. The Sauvé report revealed this Tuesday, October 5 that in France, 216,000 people were victims of assault and sexual violence committed by clerics or Catholic religious, while they were minors, between 1950 and 2020. Their number even climbs to “330,000 if we add lay aggressors”, still over the same period.

This Wednesday morning, Monsignor Éric de Moulins-Beaufort, president of the Conference of Bishops of France, was the guest of Franceinfo. He felt that “ we cannot fix the ‘irreparable “.

“We must be clear, we cannot repair the irreparable. We must first recognize that the victims are victims, it is very important. There will be a financial dimension “, promises Bishop Éric de Moulins-Beaufort pic.twitter.com/nq6G79Laz3

Does the Church have the means to compensate 261,000 victims?

Monsignor Éric de Moulins- Beaufort specifies that the Church will do “whatever it does to compensate the victims”, but he still recognizes on Franceinfo : “We have no money hidden in cellars.”

To give a sum of money, to deprive ourselves of a sum of money on our side, is to recognize to someone that he has really suffered because of the Church

He indeed admitted that the recommendations of Ciase put the Church in difficulty by refusing her to use the donations of the faithful to compensate the victims.

“The Church has not put anything aside” , assured the president of the Conference of Bishops of France , in the aim to give money to victims of sexual violence and abuse. “We will follow what we can follow” of the recommendations of Ciase, he added.

I hope a number of devotees will be willing to help us so that we can do this

A hypothesis mentioned by Monsignor Éric de Moulins-Beaufort to replenish the Church’s coffers and ensure compensation for the victims.

In France 216,000 people were victims of assault and sexual violence committed by Catholic clerics or religious, when they were minors, between 1950 and 2020.
