Cowboys news: Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence likely to miss time with injuries

Cowboys’ Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence reportedly to miss time with injuries – Sean-Leahy, Yahoo Sports

The injuries to Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence against the Giants were more severe than previously expected.

The Dallas Cowboys suffered a pair of key injuries on defense during their 20-15 win over the New York Giants on Thursday night.

First, All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons injured his left ankle late in the fourth quarter. He was forced to leave the game and after undergoing an MRI on Friday he was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain.

Parsons, who leads the Cowboys in pressures with 20, said afterward he iced the ankle and that he was going to try to be on the field when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, it’s possible that Parsons misses more than the Steelers game, but no timeline has been announced by the team.

The other notable injury happened to four-time Pro Bowl defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who hurt his foot in the third quarter. Pelissero reports that the Cowboys’ leader in sacks (3) will miss “multiple weeks” of action.

Dak Prescott: Cowboys won’t get ‘overexcited’ about win over Giants – Patrik Walker, DallasCowboys.com

The Cowboys will have tunnel vision, according to Dak Prescott, after beating the Giants.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.A must-win game in Week 4? You bet it was. It is not an overreaction to have labeled the Dallas Cowboys matchup against the New York Giants as such, and while Dak Prescott and Co. all refrained from using that exact labeling heading into the game at MetLife Stadium, they pulled the veil off following their 20-1 victory in primetime.

As Prescott explained, it definitely lifted some, though not all, of the weight off of the collective chest of the Cowboys.

“It was huge,” the All-Pro quarterback said. “After obviously losing two, especially at home, coming on the road, first division game — division wins are always tough. As I said, then you add on the road and before a long weekend, puts a better taste in our mouth.”

The win ends a two-game slide that pushed the Cowboys to a 1-2 record to start the season, made that much more bitter by having not won at AT&T Stadium since Dec. 30 against the Detroit Lions, and they’ll continue to look in the mirror for ways to improve.

Enjoying the win against the Giants is deserved, but it’s also true that they struggled to put them away on several occasions. Keeping that in mind is key when looking at the onslaught of playoff-caliber teams they’ll face over the next six weeks or more.

“At the end of the day, as I’ve said, even after those two losses the past two weeks, it’s a process,” Prescott added. “We’re not going to get complacent. We’re not going to get overexcited about what we’ve done [against NYG]. It’s about building and it’s about figuring out what we can do better in all phases, but it’s a lot easier to do that with a win.”

IMPACT: So who is rushing the passer now? – Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com

Dallas is depleted when it comes to edge rushers with Parsons and Lawrence out.

FRISCO, Texas – What a difference a year makes. In that case, how about what a difference half-a-year makes.

Last season, the Cowboys had Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler and Sam Williams on board to rush the passer.

Fowler and Armstrong signed with Dan Quinn and the Commanders back in March. Williams suffered a torn ACL early in training camp and is out for the season.

And now, a 20-15 win over the Giants proved to be costly as both Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence suffered injuries that should force them to miss time, and potentially both missing next week’s game in Pittsburgh.

So now what?

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said on 105.3 “The Fan” on Friday that the team will look at all possibilities to add pass-rush edge.

“Well, we’re always looking for help – that goes without saying,” Jones said. “We have to have to some guys internally step up.”

Trade? Haason Reddick among 5 NFL edge rushers Cowboys should consider after Parsons, Lawrence injuries – KD Drummond, Cowboys Wire

There needs to be some urgency from the Cowboys to address their edge rusher situation, and here’s some options.

Haason Reddick, NY Jets

Reddick was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New York Jets over the summer, in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick. Reddick hasn’t stepped foot inside the Jets facilities, holding out the entire training camp and regular season. He even demanded to be traded again in August after the two sides failed to rework his contract.

Reddick has been accruing fines and is weeks away from having his contract toll to 2025, which means he’ll be locked into the Jets for 2025 under the same terms if he doesn’t report by a deadline. It appears he feels slighted by the Jets so it’s unclear whether or not he’d play under his current contract for another team, but the Cowboys have the cap room to take on the final 14 weeks of his agreement, sitting over $25 million in the black after the extensions for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini laid out a scenario where Reddick’s reps appear to have hinted he’d like to return to Philly (via Bleacher Report), but would he take a trip to Dallas also? There are questions, of course.

If Reddick were willing to play without a new deal, would the Jets acquiesce? Would a 2026 third rounder or worth do the trick? How long of a ramp-up period would be required for a player who hasn’t worked out with a team all year? How long does Dallas think they’ll be without Parsons and Lawrence? Does the front office care more about winning in 2024 or cap space to carry over? In the likelihood those questions can’t be adequately addressed, there are some other options to explore.

Dallas Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs proves he is still among NFL’s elite – Josh Sanchez, Sports Illustrated

Trevon Diggs reminded the world who he is against a young and talented Malik Nabers.

Entering the 2024 NFL season, there were questions about how Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs would bounce back after missing the majority of last season with a torn ACL.

Diggs began training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but after a week returned to the field.

Now, with the regular season underway, Diggs is on a mission to show is still among the NFL’s elite defensive backs. He did just that during Thursday night’s win over the New York Giants.

While Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers balled out with 12 catches for 115 yards, it was not at Diggs’ expense.

In fact, Diggs locked Nabers down when he was matched up against the rookie sensation.

Diggs allowed only two catches for 16 yards on five targets. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had a 19.2 passer rating when targeting a Diggs-covered Nabers.
