The Cuban priest Kenny Fernández Delgado asked to pray for the life of the independent artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, who began a hunger and thirst strike in a maximum security prison south of Havana.
The priest officiated a mass from his Facebook profile in which he placed a sign asking his faithful prayers for Otero Alcántara, whose life is in danger, because his body has become very weak from the previous strikes and the long period of unjust imprisonment.
Fernández Delgado also mentioned in his account the political prisoners of Holguín and the young Chadrián Vilá from Matanzas who started hunger strikes in protest against the hefty sentences imposed in the trials for demonstrating on 11J.
The leader of the San Isidro Movement has been imprisoned for more than six months in a penitentiary center in Guanajay, province of Artemisa, after trying to join the massive protests of the past July 11. He is accused of the alleged crimes of aggravated contempt, public disorder and instigation to commit a crime, and at the beginning of this month, the Attorney General’s Office denied the request for change of precautionary measure in his favor.
There is no news about his physical and psychological condition since 18 last January, when was transferred to a punishment cell in retaliation for his declared conviction of not receiving water, food and visits.
The activist Claudia Genlui Hidalgo shared on social networks that the independent artist had communicated to say that he renounced all the rights of a prisoner “because he should not be. Her body is imprisoned for an injustice, but her mind has always been free and she wants to keep it that way”, added the art curator.
For his part, Fernández Delgado has repeatedly shown his support for the protesters of the 11J and the rest of the political prisoners. During the first days of January, he joined the campaign that, from social networks, urged news agencies based in Cuba to give coverage to the trials against the participants in the protests.
“I also join. I have the right to ask for help. Above all, to ask for prayer and closeness to others in the person of political prisoners, especially in these days of trial starting on Monday, January 10, the priest said. Numerous Internet users responded to the priest’s claim. “Thank you father, we cannot help but be moved by your love and dedication, it is beautiful to know that we still have Cubans like you,” said a user.
“The world has to know the truth about these trials and all the violence that Cubans experience. They are false processes and to remain silent in the face of this arbitrariness is a crime, ”said one of the comments. “ We admire you a lot, father, for your courage and for not being afraid of the consequences suffered by those who openly oppose the Castro dictatorship,” added another Internet user.
Fernández Delgado visited the same January 1 the parents of the young man arrested Jonathan Torres Farrat, the 17-year-old adolescent who remains in prison for joining the social outbreak of July 2021.
“Today God gave me the opportunity to visit Bárbara Farrat Guillén and her husband Orlando, they are the parents of Jonathan Torres Farrat, who is only 17 years old and has been in prison for 4 months”, expressed the priest in a message.
Due to his activism, Fernández Delgado has been the victim of threats from the Cuban government. On November 24 he reported to the police for harassing him while distributed white flowers as part of his 15N initiative . Days before, on the 11th, also complained to the authorities for trying to intimidate and defame his family.
