Cory Abbott, a rookie for the Chicago Cubs, has shared some very valuable and important insight with MLB fans on Twitter.

Well, the MLB lockout (unfortunately) continues on and the very online discourse surrounding the situation has also continued on. Most online platforms lack any sort of space for the nuance required for discussing complex topics, but sometimes there’s enough room for some very important perspectives to be shared.

Thankfully, that was the case when Cory Abbott, a rookie for the Chicago Cubs, took to Twitter to give some insight into his contract situation.

As he was taking the opportunity to respond to an MLB fan who believes players should not be requesting more compensation, Abbott shared an anecdote about how much he made during his first year on the 40-man roster.

Hint: he wasn’t making an absurd amount of money, despite what some might be inclined to believe.

I was making less than my strength coach on first year 40 man.

Chicago Cubs: Cory Abbott shares contract and compensation insight with MLB fans on Twitter

Abbott apparently made about $45,000. It should be noted that this isn’t a terrifyingly small amount of money. But, it’s not shocking that athletes would ask for more compensation when that’s the amount of money they’re making.

First year 40 man is about 45k for the year

Plenty of people are going to continue to debate the merits of everyone on all sides of this disagreement and lockout. But if those debates are going to happen, they should take place with the knowledge that not every player asking for more compensation is making millions upon millions of dollars. Some guys are simply trying to make a living.

Abbott isn’t really afforded the opportunity to live lavishly while making that much money. It’s not a bad salary, but professional athletes should be paid a bit more.
