Derek Carr reportedly won’t accept a trade to any NFL team and will be released by the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
But one of the teams interested in trading for him, the New Orleans Saints, is carrying over their interest into free agency.
“I know the Saints are still interested, and I know he’s still interested in them,” As Rapoport said Monday on the Pat McAfee Show. “Now, when he’s a free agent, he can potentially just negotiate his own new contract with the Saints and not have to worry about his old contract.”

The Raiders and Carr were essentially working with a Feb. 15 deadline, when around $40 million of contract guarantees over the next two seasons would become locked in. The Raiders had made the decision they weren’t interested in paying that sum, but Carr has a no-trade clause and the power to dictate where he ended up.
Ultimately, the 31-year-old seemingly decided losing those guarantees in favor of the flexibility to test free agency was worthwhile. The hope for Carr will be that enough teams have interest in his services to create a vibrant market and earn him the sort of contract that gets him the lucrative guaranteed money back that he will lose when he is released.
A number of teams may be in the market for a four-time Pro Bowler.
The Saints—who used a combination of Andy Dalton, Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill under center last season—obviously are.
The New York Jets can’t be thrilled with the Zach Wilson experiment at this point. If the Baltimore Ravens trade Lamar Jackson, they’ll need to find his replacement. The Carolina Panthers desperately need to address the position. Ditto for the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders. The Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots could be teams that decide to shake things up at the position.
A lot of the market may be determined by whether Aaron Rodgers decides to play another year and if the Green Bay Packers do shop him.
But after that, Carr should be the hottest commodity. It’s potentially a good position for him to be in this offseason.
