It’s been three weekends since the Fruits Basket -prelude- theatrical special episodes and the feature is still going strong despite only being shown in only 46 theaters across Japan, with more expansions coming this Friday, then the Friday after, and finally March 25, the Friday after that. Alongside the latest updates on the box office takings of the feature, the third-week gifts for filmgoers were unveiled.
As of Sunday, March 6, Fruits Basket -prelude- has made more than 130 million yen (US$1.13 million) at the Japanese box office from 74,000 tickets sold. As a roadshow release, the feature, which is both a prequel and a sequel to the Fruits Basket TV anime will be opening in more and more theaters over the coming weeks.
For theaters that originally released Fruits Basket -prelude- on February 18, starting March 11 filmgoers will get one of two different postcards, one featuring Kyo and Tohru, and the other featuring Tohru’s parents Kyoko and Katsuya when they were first falling in love. All other theaters in Japan will get the gift in their third week of release.
The prequel story, Fruits Basket -prelude-, was released alongside a digest of the series as well as the sequel story on February 18, 2022. A Blu-ray of the stories was released on the same day in theater shops in Japan. The entire three seasons of Fruits Basket are streaming right now on Crunchyroll, which describes the series as such:
Tohru Honda thought her life was headed for misfortune when a family tragedy left her living in a tent. When her small home is discovered by the mysterious Soma clan, she suddenly finds herself living with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Soma. But she quickly learns their family has a bizarre secret of their own: when hugged by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Zodiac!
