Gilbert Burns has reacted to upcoming opponent Khamzat Chimaev calling the Brazilian an “easy fight”.
Within the context of the welterweight division, there have been few more intriguing fighters to watch in recent years than Gilbert Burns. His rise to prominence at 170 pounds took him all the way to a title shot and while he ultimately fell short against Kamaru Usman, many believe he still has what it takes to challenge for the gold in the future.
One man standing in the way of that dream is Khamzat Chimaev. “Borz” has been on an absolute tear since entering the UFC and now, he’s being lined up for a showdown with “Durinho” later this year.
After Chimaev played down the threat of his next foe, Burns decided to offer up a retort of his own during a chat with The Schmo.
“I think he’s confident. He says whatever he wants. I think he’s very good, but I’m the biggest test that he’s gonna see. I’m excited. I respect the guy and I think he’s very very tough, but let him be a little overconfident and think he’s gonna walk [through me]. Just make sure you guys get the pay-per-view, April 9, tune in. It’s gonna be a good one, I’m excited. Let him talk, I have no answer. He can say whatever he wants.”
Burns, who is coming off the back of a nice win over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, will likely thrive off of being underestimated – especially against someone with as much hype as Chimaev.
As per the man himself, it also seems like UFC 273 on April 9 is where this bout could take place.
Do you think the hype behind Khamzat Chiamev is warranted? Is Gilbert Burns going to be the rightful favourite heading into their proposed UFC 273 fight? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments, BJPENN Nation!
