[Interview] We discover Atelier Sophie 2 from the hand of Junzo Hosoi, producer of Gust: exclusive details of the new story

As part of our coverage of the Tokyo Game Show, today it is an honor for us to announce together with Koei Tecmo the next release of Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream , the next title in the series that will kick off its great anniversary next year, and which is full of news that we will detail here today exclusively along with an interview with Junzo Hosoi, the director of Gust , which will tell us more about the game and the anniversary.

To begin, let’s tell you what this new installment is about: Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream tells the story of one of Sophie and Plachta’s many adventures after leaving Kirchen Bell, Sophie’s hometown. During their travels, they discover a huge tree identical to the one Plachta had seen in a dream, and as they get closer, a mysterious vortex appears that pushes them inward. Thus, Sophie wakes up alone in a new world called Erde Wiege , and it is not long before she learns of the existence of an alchemist named Plachta who lives on the outskirts of the local town, Roytale .

When Sophie arrives, she meets a young foodie enthusiast alchemy called Plachta, and although she shares the same name as her friend, she doesn’t know her at all. As the search for her friend Plachta continues, Sophie meets Roytale’s prominent alchemist, Ramizel Erlenmeyer , who willingly agrees to help her in her time of need. This new installment combines the art of the Mysterious series with graphics and animations of the most cutting-edge in the series.

As for playability, battles now have no load times that are worth it. When an enemy encounter occurs, combat starts instantly , making the pace of the game much more fluid. In the combats we will be able to control six characters at the same time, with three in the front and three in the rear, to form two teams that will cooperate in a mechanic called «Multi-Linked Turn Battles» that will unleash powerful strategies against enemies.

On the other hand, the alchemy system has also been revisited . While the game features a panel-based game similar to the Mysterious series, it has undergone some improvements to allow both veteran and new players to enjoy the process of creating new items . This comes in the existence of two different types of panels : the normal ones , which make it easier to create objects, and the restricted ones , which are complicated but will allow us to create objects with better properties.

Having said all this, we leave you with the interview with Mr. Junzo Hosoi!

How did the idea of the game come about? Why did you choose Sophie to be the protagonist of this new story?

The Atelier series will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year. In honor of this historic year, we were thinking about what kind of title we could have to act as an “opening title” to kick off the celebration. The Atelier series is the result of moving on with our fans, so we reexamined our previous titles and how players have responded to them on social media, online popularity poll results, etc. Also, the decision to revisit a former protagonist was based on the very positive reception after Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout, so we started to consider creating a story with Sophie and Plachta.

On the other hand, at Atelier Sophie, Sophie was a novice alchemist, then at Atelier Firis she was an alchemy teacher, and finally at Atelier Lydie & Suelle she became an alchemist who has reached an extraordinary level. Obviously, during that growth, Sophie and Plachta would have had many experiences. So we thought that being able to show one of those periods of experience as a sequel and a new title would be really fun and full of surprises, and that’s when we decided to cast Sophie as the lead.

In this new journey, Sophie is looking for her friend Plachta, but she finds someone who is not her but shares her name. What kind of person is this new Plachta?

This Plachta is a different person but shares the same name, and came to the dream world Erde Wiege before Sophie. He may seem like a cold character, but he has an emotional side in which he is moved to tears when he loses at something. If you want to know more about her, stay tuned!

This new entry is a complete surprise, as everyone expected something like Atelier Ryza 3. Will Atelier Sophie 2 have something to do with the future of Ryza’s journey or will it be a standalone story?

The story of the Mysterious series that began with Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, and the Secret series that began with Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout, they are different stories. The story of Atelier Sophie 2 takes place between the events of Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book and Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey.

Which is the biggest change to the series introduced in this game?

There are several, but one of the biggest changes I can talk about right now is the instantaneous transition of the game world to fighting. Other than that, there are differences in the way we create the visuals … Really detailed things, like giving the characters more facial expressions to show a variety of emotions, and more.

Given its popularity, do you think the Atelier series would be in a position to receive a new animated adaptation, as Blue Reflection has done recently?

Of course I would like the series to receive a new animated adaptation. To all of you who are reading me, please give us your support!

As the Mysterious and Arland series have received new games in the form of Atelier Sophie 2 and Atelier Lulua, can we expect something new for the Atelier Dusk series in the future?

With Atelier Lulua ~ The Scion of Arland ~ and Atelier Sophie 2, we had a lot of Good luck with the timing of the development team and illustrators. In addition, other elements miraculously came together, which allowed us and allows us to create these games. With the Dusk series, if several elements come together miraculously as has happened on these occasions, it could be possible!

The Atelier series is getting bigger and bigger in the West. Have you considered translating Atelier Sophie 2 or future new entries into more languages, such as Spanish, to see if that helps increase the sales of the games?

If it exists sufficient demand, we would like to consider increasing the number of languages our games are localized to!

Thank you very much for your time Mr. Hosoi!

And for you, we can only remind you that Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream will be available this February 25 for Nintendo Switch and other platforms. So don’t miss it! Sophie’s new adventure promises to be more exciting than ever.
