Jason Kelce Just Hinted That He ‘Could Very Well’ Retire From the NFL This Year

Jason Kelce has the kind of resume any pro football player would be proud of, with a Super Bowl win to his name and six Pro Bowl selections. After getting all the way to this year’s Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles (a historic game in which he played against his brother, the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce), however, it’s looking like the 2023 season might be Kelce’s last in the NFL.

During a recent conversation with The NFL Report‘s Steve Wyche and James Palmer, Kelce confirmed that he is considering retiring as early as this year.

“We took on a lot last year, and it ended up working out really, really well for Travis and I at the end of the season, although we did come up one game short,” he said. “You know, I think it is a lot, and I think the way we’ve justified it as a family is that this is going to be over pretty soon here. If it’s this year, which it very well could be, we want to make sure that we’re ready to go when football is done, and with all of these different opportunities and things, to figure out what it is we want to do with our retirement. And then on top of that, just enjoy the last time you have left with the guys you have.”

But while Kelce might have one eye on his post-football career, that doesn’t mean he has stopped embracing “new and fun challenges” while he’s still on the team. Case in point: last year’s charity Christmas album, A Philly Special Christmas, which he recorded with fellow Eagles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata—an endeavor he enjoyed so much he’s repeating the experience this year with his brother Travis.

“I mean, the Christmas album, the reason we did it last year, I didn’t know if there was ever going to be an opportunity to do that again with two teammates and a bunch of Philadelphia musicians,” said Kelce. “So when these opportunities come up, you realize that the closer you are to the end of your career, the opportunities to do these fun and engaging things with fans and friends is going to be less and less, and you realize that and it makes you want to do them that much more, because when it’s done it’s not going to be there as much.”
