Kate Middleton’s CBeebies Fairisle knitted jumper has a regal history

Kate Middleton‘s incredible wardrobe has become famous in it’s own right. The Queen in waiting as a result is known as the most influential and fashionable members of the Royal Family.

Whether it’s setting tailoring trends or putting fashion brands on the map, there is nothing that the 40-year-old can’t seem to influence.

For her most recent appearance, The Duchess Of Cambridge announced that she would be following in Prince Charles’ footsteps to participate in CBeebies Bedtime Story to mark Children’s Mental Health Week.

In a promotional picture for the programme which will air on Sunday 13 February at 6.50pm see’s Kate sitting cross legged in a pair of light blue jeans and a cosy cream Fairisle patterned jumper.

Whilst we’re used to Kate fuelling us with outfit envy, many of her looks have sentimental or symbolic meaning and this is just another one of those to add to the list.

The gorgeous jumper is the Fairisle knit from royally-approved British brand brand Holland Cooper and costs just £179.

On first appearances it might just seem that Kate has simply chosen a weather appropriate knit, however the humble Fair Isle jumper has quite the regal history to it.

The famous style was made more popular back in 1921 when The Duke Of Windsor, who was still The Prince of Wales at the time sported the look and again in 1925 in a portrait by John St Helier Lander.

This made the print more popular as just like now, seeing a member of the Royal Family sporting the look influenced the trends at the time.

As well as this, the most memorable person who was a fan of the classic design was the one and only Princess Diana.

With it being Diana, it was given a stylish twist with her brilliant sense of style and has now become a much-loved pattern.

The Princess of Wales was seen sporting similar items to Kate’s on a few occasions, one being leaving her Earls Court flat in November 1980.

A second time was in May 1981 when she and Prince Charles walked the grounds of Craigowan Lodge in Balmoral, Scotland.

The Duchess is often seen taking inspiration from her late mother-in-law so it’s no surprise that she was inspired by her with this regal style.

In May 2021 Kate and Prince William paid a visit to Manor Farm near Darlington where the 40-year-old sported a very similar design by Brora.

The Fairisle style has become a go-to design for the mum-of-three to wear when she sports more casual outfits on outings.

Naturally Kate is passing her fashion knowledge down to her children as she dressed Princess Charlotte in an adorable yellow button up cardigan for her second birthday portrait.

We know this wont be the last time we see this pattern worn by members of the Royal Family so next time you spot it on an outing think of it more than just a cosy winter woolly.
