Lucky Australian Player Wins $68M from Powerball

A lucky Australian player has scored the top Powerball prize, scooping up some AUD 100 million (approximately $68 million). The winner, who came forward to claim her prize, revealed that she had almost lost the ticket.

The Biggest Prize in the History of Queensland

The fortunate lottery enthusiast this time is a Brisbane woman from Aspley. She has now joined the Australian lottery hall of fame, grabbing the third-biggest prize in the history of the country. She is also the biggest-ever lottery winner in Queensland, securing her extra bragging rights.

The winning numbers for the August 22 draw were 16, 24, 11, 4, 10, 18 and 23, with a Powerball of 6. The winning ticket was purchased at Nextra Chermside Newsagency at Westfield Chermside in Brisbane, lottery officials said.

The Woman Felt Lucky

In an interview with lottery officials, the woman revealed that she isn’t a regular Powerball player. However, at the start of the year, she felt that she was going to win a big prize. Despite her relatives’ skepticism, the woman decided to play some Powerball and prove the naysayers wrong. And proved the naysayers wrong, she did.

The winning ticket, the Queensland woman said, was bought in the days leading up to her birthday. The woman didn’t think much of it at the time and, after almost losing the ticket, put it in her car glovebox where she completely forgot about it.

The jackpot winner told lottery officials that she only remembered to check her ticket only after returning from a morning run and hearing that an unidentified player had won the big prize. Once she learned that she was, in fact, the unidentified winner, she was left in shock.

When discussing her plans, the woman admitted that her family doesn’t really live lavishly. While she didn’t have a clear idea of how to spend the money, the woman said that she might travel a bit and visit New Zealand and Fiji.

Earlier this year, another lucky Queensland woman won big, grabbing an AUD 10 million prize from Powerball.

In the meantime, a player from Adelaide was surprised to realize that her AUD 1,000 lottery win was in fact an AUD 1 million prize.
