If you’re among the pocket of superhero fans who aren’t quite sold on the Sonyverse—AKA the rapidly-expanding universe of Spidey villains, currently featuring Venom and Morbius—then today might be the day you jump on board.
Why, you ask? We have some news on the Madame Web front. If you’re unfamiliar with the project, Deadline reported back in February that Dakota Johnson would star in a feature film based on the Spider-Man foe. In the comic books, Madame Web typically has been portrayed as an elderly woman who was born blind, but with a condition called myasthenia gravis that imbued her with clairvoyance. More on that soon. Now, Deadline is back with another casting announcement. According to the outlet, Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney will join the film in an undisclosed role. Apparently, Sweeney was weighing multiple offers in the wake of her noise-making Euphoria performance, and chose Madame Web as her first big superhero outing.
We couldn’t agree more with Sweeney’s choice. She would make a phenomenal Black Cat—or, if Sony is feeling especially ambitious—a Spider-Woman to fight against Johnson’s Madame Web. Count us in. It’s worth mentioning, though, that we’ll likely get a brand-new imagining of Madame Web because, you know, Johnson is 32 years old. “Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web never actively fought any villains” adds the Deadline story. “For that reason, sources have stressed it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders say due to her psychic sensory powers, she is essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange.” Now, we just have to get Ellen DeGeneres on board as the villain of this thing, then we’ll really have some drama.
Madame Web does not have a release date quite yet, but our best guess is that it will release in either late 2023, or early 2024. We still have to get through Kraven the Hunter before then.
