Benjamin Sesko is 18 years old one of the biggest prospects in European football. The Slovenian international striker is one of Red Bull’s great offensive pearls. At Salzburg he follows in the footsteps of players who have already made the leap like Haaland or Patson Daka. This week Bild revealed Real Madrid’s interest in the young man and AS has contacted Elvis Basanovic, his agent, to explain the situation.
Benjamin Sesko is one of the most important young players in Europe at the moment. Do you remember the first time you saw him play soccer? What caught your attention immediately?
Of course I remember. It was very exciting to see such a tall player with such good coordination, good speed, not as fast as he is today, and a very soft touch of the ball. That impressed me enormously.
Now he plays for Red Bull Salzburg. In recent years, many very good players have grown up there and then joined powerful teams in Europe. Why did you choose the Red Bull project? What is your goal in Salzburg?
We chose Red Bull Salzburg because they showed us that they know very well what young talents need and how to work with them. They presented Benjamin with the best project for his progress and development. It was also very interesting for us the opportunity to play senior football at the age of 16 at Liefering.
Sesko had an impressive performance during his last year at Liefering, the Salzburg satellite team. And his first steps in Salzburg have also been great. Newspapers often compare Benjamin Sesko with Haaland and we have read Šeško saying that he is not scared by that. What’s your opinion on this tag: ‘the new Haaland’?
I don’t like it when people and the media compare Sesko to Haaland, as each player is different and unique. I cannot accept that it is someone’s copy. It’s just Benjamin Sesko . He has his own way of playing, his own career goals, and he’s sure to have a different career too. If I delve into that, there are no two players in the world with the same career or the same characteristics. There are so many different qualities that players have and so many things that affect their careers and achievements that it is really very thankless to compare two players.
We respect La Liga because we think it is an interesting and quality league. There are some of the best clubs in the world and it is without a doubt one of the best leagues in the world. But I think it’s not something that I discovered.
Slovenia is a small country, but very successful in sport. In football Benjamin Sesko has the example of Oblak. They are teammates on the national team. Oblak in goal and Benjamin Sesko scoring goals. Could you take Slovenia together again to the big tournaments?
Surely one of his career goals is to bring Slovenia back to a great tournament. But it doesn’t depend only on Oblak and Sesko. Soccer is a collective sport and we are a small country, only 2 million people, we had or are still having a process of generation change… I think we need time. For such a small country a lot has to happen almost ideally in order to qualify for a big tournament. But we dream and believe.
