Married At First Sight unmasked

After a year of waiting, Married At First Sight is back on our screens and a new group of single people are set to embark on a bold social experiment which will see them married to a total stranger.

While meeting a prospective partner at the altar isn’t something many of us can relate to, former MAFS star Marilyse Corrigan knows the experience like the back of her hand.

Having appeared on last year’s show, Marilyse married Franky Spencer and they happily said “I do” before separating six months after the experiment.

Here Marilyse reveals all the secrets from her own MAFS wedding day…

Brides are given a budget

Every bride wants to look their best on their wedding day and that’s without being surrounded by an array of TV cameras. As Marilyse reveals, all brides on MAFS are given money to buy their own dress, though they must dig into their own pocket if they want something more extravagant.

“As soon as I walked into the bridal shop, the first dress I saw was the one. Even before I tried it on I knew it was the one for me. It took about 10 minutes,” she says. “You’re given a budget, so if your dress costs more, you have to cover the additional cost yourself.”

There’s an early wake-up call but the wedding doesn’t start until later

According to Marilyse, contestants are told to leave their hotel at 9.30am and make their way to the wedding venue, which is kept under wraps. However, Marilyse tied the knot to Franky during a 3pm ceremony.

“I got to the venue in the morning and there was a breakfast ready for me full of croissants, cakes and juice. They treated me like royalty,” she says. “I spent hours getting ready, doing interviews and chilling with my bridesmaids while the team was making sure that Franky was ready and that all the guests had arrived.”

Toilet escorts keep the bride hidden from the groom

In order to do what the TV show says on the tin, the Married At First Sight producers go to extreme lengths to keep the bride and groom separated before the ceremony.

“Franky was in the same building as me when we were getting ready. Obviously we couldn’t bump into each other beforehand, so the team kept radioing through to each other to keep tabs on our movements,” she says.

“If I needed to go to the toilet, I’d have to be escorted by a producer and she’d be there on her walkie talkie making sure that Franky wasn’t anywhere nearby.”

The ceremony has to be repeated

While Married At First Sight may be all about romance, the Channel 4 programme is ultimately a TV show, meaning that some bits of the ceremony are naturally refilmed.

“The ceremony took an hour. They made me walk down the aisle twice because I looked at the camera the first time and then we had to redo a bit of our vows that wasn’t clear enough on camera,” says Marilyse.

The newlyweds don’t spend much time together

And with all the filming required, the bride and groom don’t actually spend that much time together once they’ve said “I do”, admits Marilyse.

“Once you’ve got married, the bride and groom are separated for an hour or two. In that time, you’re being asked questions like ‘what do you think of him?’ all the while you’ve not even spoken to him,” she adds.

While the happy couple are busy filming their pieces to camera, it’s a good time for their families to get to know each other.

“I got really bad FOMO because mine and Franky’s family were in the bar having drinks and they ended up getting to know one another before me and Franky had got to bond,” she adds.

There’s a phone and social media ban

GIven that the Married At First Sight experiment is filmed in advance, any guests at the weddings are required to stay tight-lipped about the occasion.

“Guests were allowed to take pictures on their phones but they weren’t allowed to share anything on social media,” explains Marilyse.

The contestants are also given a replacement phone which they must use for the duration of the TV show.

“As soon as I got to the venue, they took my phone off of me and gave me a replacement one. I had to say goodbye to my actual phone which had my kids at the end of it,” she says.
