Pope Francis welcomed today in the Vatican the retiring German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is on a farewell visit to Rome, including talks with the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, DPA reported.
Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer arrived this morning at the Apostolic Palace, where they had a private audience with the Pope.
The meeting in the library of the Apostolic Palace palace lasted about 45 minutes, TASS reported.
The Holy Father gave Merkel a bronze miniature of the “Holy Doors” of St. Peter’s Basilica, and Merkel presented him with a book about Michelangelo, reports BTA.
This is the fifth private meeting of Merkel, daughter of a Protestant pastor and theologian, with Pope Francis, who is known for his high opinion of the German leader.
Later in the day, Merkel is expected to speak with Prime Minister Draghi, and in the evening she will speak at an event at the Colosseum dedicated to peace.
