The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, urged Israel on Wednesday to “immediately” end its operation in Rafah. “Should Israel continue its military operation in Rafah, it would inevitably put a heavy strain on the EU’s relationship with Israel,” Borrell said in a statement Wednesday. Approximately 600,000 people have fled the southern Gaza city since Israel issued evacuation orders on May 6, according to an estimate from the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.
The Biden administration plans to push ahead with more than $1 billion in weapons deals for Israel, U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter told The Washington Post. In an email Wednesday, UNRWA accused young Israelis — including children — of being behind two attacks Monday evening, three days after a previous attack. No one was harmed in any of the attacks, it said.
The death toll in Gaza has risen to 35,233, and 79,141 people have been injured in the enclave since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. It said the majority of the dead are women and children.
Israel estimates that 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, including more than 300 soldiers, and says 273 soldiers have been killed since the launch of its military operation in Gaza.
