Middle East conflict live updates: Biden to approve $1 billion in arms to Israel; E.U. condemns Rafah operation

The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, urged Israel on Wednesday to “immediately” end its operation in Rafah. “Should Israel continue its military operation in Rafah, it would inevitably put a heavy strain on the EU’s relationship with Israel,” Borrell said in a statement Wednesday. Approximately 600,000 people have fled the southern Gaza city since Israel issued evacuation orders on May 6, according to an estimate from the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees.

The Biden administration plans to push ahead with more than $1 billion in weapons deals for Israel, U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter told The Washington Post. The U.S. withheld a shipment of bombs earlier this month due to concerns over Israel’s planned offensive in Rafah.

A Jewish American Biden political appointee resigned from her post at the Interior Department on Wednesday, saying she could no longer work for the administration because of President Biden’s continued support of Israel’s war in Gaza.

The United Nations is investigating the killing of a U.N. security worker in Rafah; a U.N.spokesperson said that the worker is believed to have been killed by tank fire and that it was safe to assume only Israel operates tanks in the region.

The head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, condemned an arson attack against the agency’s office in Jerusalem. In an email Wednesday, UNRWA accused young Israelis — including children — of being behind two attacks Monday evening, three days after a previous attack. No one was harmed in any of the attacks, it said.

The death toll in Gaza has risen to 35,233, and 79,141 people have been injured in the enclave since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. It said the majority of the dead are women and children.

Israel estimates that 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, including more than 300 soldiers, and says 273 soldiers have been killed since the launch of its military operation in Gaza.
