Nintendo Switch Pro: An article talks about 4K development kits in the wild, Nintendo reacts

At least eleven game development companies would have in their possession a Nintendo Switch Pro 4K development kit. This is what the American site Bloomberg has just stated in a new article . Bloomberg claims to have this information from employees from these eleven companies. Given the confidentiality of such a subject, these people wished to testify anonymously. In its article, the site provides some details about the video game companies concerned. Bloomberg explains that they are located all over the world and range from top publishers to small studios. The article even goes so far as to indicate that Zynga is one of the structures with a Switch 4K development kit. Shortly after the publication of this article, a representative denied this information. According to information obtained by Bloomberg, this Switch 4K should not be released before the end of next year. Which could cause some dissatisfaction among studios that have been working on games for this more powerful Switch for many months. Bloomberg also claims that some of the developers concerned were surprised by the announcement of the Nintendo Switch OLED.

Studios ready for the Switch 4K but in expectation

In terms of technical capacities, the latter does not allow them to run what they are working on. Developers polled by Bloomberg also indicate that they do not expect their Switch 4K games to be released until the second half of 2022. Likely clue, Zynga recently postponed its Star Wars: Hunters in development on Switch and mobile in 2022. Bloomberg explains that it does not know when the decision to switch from the Switch Pro 4K to the Switch OLED was made. One of his sources aware of Nintendo’s plans for the hardware, however, claims to know the reasons. The 4K model has reportedly been postponed due to the now notorious component shortages. Among the components required to produce the Switch 4K are ABF substrates. According to executives of companies that supply such components to Nintendo, supplies are fully booked until 2025. But it is possible that Nintendo is one of the groups that have secured some of these stocks. Of course, Nintendo can ultimately decide to never release this mysterious Switch Pro 4K. However, this would have negative consequences for its partners. For Bloomberg, everything suggests that the number of development studios currently in possession of a Nintendo Switch Pro 4K kit is well over eleven. Downgrading games to get them on the original Switch would significantly complicate the task of developers. And that would also inflate already substantial development costs due to the switch to 4K.

Nintendo is not happy

With such an article not doing its business, Nintendo officially reacted after its publication. On its official Twitter account intended for its investors, the Kyoto firm issued a denial: An article published on September 30, 2021 mistakenly claims that Nintendo provides tools for (game) development on a 4K compatible Nintendo Switch . To guarantee a good understanding with our investors and our clients, we would like to point out that this information is false. We also want to re-state that, as we announced in July, we have no plans to release any other model other than the Nintendo Switch – OLED model. The latter will be released on October 8, 2021. Bloomberg’s article may impact its share price and sales of the OLED Switch. It is therefore not surprising that Nintendo denies the information disseminated by the American site. This does not mean that Bloomberg invented everything, however. Especially since Nintendo does not specify what is false according to him. The paper contains a lot of information and this denial deserves to be more precise… When the content of an article does not stick with the official speech or that it can adversely affect the stock market price, a company generally does not hesitate to deny information which is nevertheless true. In video games, and elsewhere, denials of truthful information are frequent. Nintendo has in this regard already denied the existence of real hardware revisions of its consoles. And in some cases, these denials were made just hours before the official announcement of the product concerned. Ultimately, denials are to be taken with as much tweezers as rumors.
