More than half of studios surveyed report annual revenue below €300,000

The number of game studios in France reporting annual sales above €10 million was up 14.4% year-on-year in 2022, according to a new report from French trade body SNJV.

Over 12% of French studios did reach that €10 million threshold last year. Around 8.3% of them even surpassed €20 million in revenue. The majority was much lower though, with over half of all French studios having an annual revenue below €300,000 in 2022.

The French games industry consisted of 1,000 companies last year, including 577 game development studios. Independent studios made up 39% of the industry.

38% of studios self published their game in 2022, a decrease of 9% when compared to 2020.

85% of studios consider France an “attractive territory” to make games according to the report, with 31% of the respondents saying tax incentives is what makes it most attractive.

The quality of training provided by educational institutions and “French quality of life” were also mentioned as factors.

Data showed that between 400 and 600 jobs within game development are expected to be created in 2023, with over 52% of companies planning to hire this year.

Women made up 24% of the French industry, increasing ten points over the past four years. Women also represented 20% of managerial or executive positions in game company management in 2022, nine points higher than in 2020.

This data came from a survey of 577 developers conducted by the Syndicat National du Jeu Vidéo between February 28 and June 26, 2023.
