On Saturday (8), residents of Santa Luzia, a city in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais, were surprised by heavy rains, which made Rio das Velhas overflow and flood the municipality.
According to the local newspaper Noticando Santa Luzia, the neighborhoods located on the banks of the river were flooded, forcing residents to abandon their homes. A flood, considered the worst in years, also affected avenues and commercial establishments in the city.
The two bridges over the Rio das Velhas were blocked by the Civil Defense and Santa Luzia remained isolated and without access until this Monday (10), according to the Estado de Minas newspaper. The prefecture declared a state of emergency and requests for donations began to be made.
In the midst of the despair of the many families who fought to save their lives and belongings, Pastor Juvenal da Silveira, from the Assembly of God, opened the doors of the church to the homeless, including their own family. The leader also had his house flooded, where he lives with his wife, children, son-in-law and grandchildren.
Juvenal told Guiame that the church became a shelter for 8 families and also a place to store furniture and appliances, which the residents managed to save from the water. The AD temple soon became a point of help for the affected community.

One of them was the family of Christian journalist Elis Amâncio, who also had their home, located about 500 meters from the Rio das Velhas, which was hit by the flood.
Elis, who is facing a flood for the second time, said he is trusting in the providence and sovereignty of God. “Even though we know that God will provide, it hurts a lot. It’s all under water. But, there is the certainty of our faith! We don’t understand now, but we will understand later. Here is gratitude for deliverance once again, the Lord has kept our family”, wrote the Christian in a post on her instagram, on Monday (10).
Nas In social networks, the journalist received support from Christian leaders, such as singer Nívea Soares, pastor Helena Tannure and pastor Lucinho.
