Filming has been halted on the third season of “Star Trek: Picard” following a sizable COVID-19 outbreak.

The series employs one of TV’s biggest crews with more than 450 staffers and on Monday, the first day of work after the Christmas break, more than fifty members reportedly tested positive.

The infections are said to have impacted multiple zones, including cast members in zone A. Production in Los Angeles was immediately shut down Monday and has remained dark since with filming expected to resume early next week.

“Picard” was formally renewed for a third season in September, with seasons two and three being shot back to back in a bid to control costs and accommodate production schedules. The second season shot from April-September last year with the third having been in production since September.

As the second season hasn’t aired yet, the production has some breathing room in terms of time as the third season isn’t slated to air until 2023.

The shutdown takes place as a number of shows have had to pause filming this week due to the highly contagious omicron variant, while various events have been cancelled like the Grammy Awards and multiple red carpets for film premieres. The Sundance Film Festival, which was to be in-person, is switching to be entirely virtual.
