Prince Charles Reportedly Has “Eeyore Moments” But Duchess Camilla “Jollies Him Up”

During the 16 years since Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were married, photos of the pair laughing and enjoying each others’ company have become the highlights of their many royal tours. According to one royal insider who spoke to People, that same lighthearted atmosphere also prevails in their private moments, because Camilla “jollies him up” even though Charles is prone to “Eeyore moments,” adding “she is a huge support.”

Camilla’s behind-the-scenes ability to cheer Charles up might explain the reasoning behind a recent royal decision. Last weekend, on the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne, Queen Elizabeth signaled her full support for Camilla to be given the title queen consort when Charles becomes king, replacing the original plans to call her the princess consort. When the couple wed in 2005, the palace announced that she would not take on the title of Princess of Wales, which Diana held until her death in 1997.

“There will always be some backlash but you can’t please everybody all the time,” the royal insider added, per People. “There will be people from certain constituencies who might complain.”

Though the queen’s announcement is a sign that she thinks their marriage has been a success, it’s also an appreciation for her success doing the work of a senior royal. According to the insider, people who know her well think she has done “an exemplary job since she married,” especially in women’s rights and domestic violence advocacy. “She has plowed her own field in terms of her duties and been well-liked,” the source added.

People also spoke to royal expert Robert Lacey, who gave some insight into the queen’s thinking as she weighed her most recent honor for Camilla. “As she thought about her father George VI, she would have also thought about her mother and the importance she played as a partner to him. And then, of course, with the passing of Prince Philip, she is considering the sacrifices and difficulties of being a consort.”
