Malaysian rail operator RapidKL today apologized after a video of its cleaners’s subpar sanitizing of a train drew ire online.
The Kuala Lumpur rail operator made the public apology hours after the clip of two cleaners hastily wiping down surfaces at the train at Ampang station circulated on Twitter. Thousands have viewed the clip since it was shared online.
“RapidKL would like to apologize to all our passengers for the distress, anxiety, and anger caused by a video that was circulating social media yesterday,” it said online, uploading a video of separate cleaners doing a better job. RapidKL agreed that the previous cleaners did their work “hastily.”
“Such display of non-compliance to Rapid KL’s prescribed COVID-19 prevention measures is alarming and we have taken swift action to reprimand the vendor… and discuss remedial and preventive actions to ensure this does not recur,” it added.
The seven-second offending video was originally posted to Instagram before it circulated on Twitter, and showed two female cleaners casually wiping down railings and brushing their hands through the handles above them with cloth.
“[Please] tell me this is fake! If it is true, the [operator] needs to terminate this contractor immediately!” Twitter user Devprasad888 wrote.
Rapid KL’s own video showed three staff members carefully wiping down and spraying the surfaces of seats, doors, and handles.

Some users who viewed the video spoke in defense of the two cleaners and called on public transport users to sanitize surfaces themselves.
“Omg do they really need to do their work to the most perfection? Y’all bring sanitizer with y’all too ok. If they can’t protect you, then protect yourself,” Hazimazmann wrote
Vlep_ chimed in: “It’s the last station and they have 3 to 4 minutes until the train leaves, is it enough for 2 to 3 people to cover 6 train carriages? I’m not backing them up but bring your own sanitizer for better protection.”
