This year, we have decided to rank the drivers in order for their end-of-season report. We are thus going to publish the 20 results in the reverse order of the classification that the editorial staff of Nextgen-Auto established by noting the drivers.
Charles’ seventh place Leclerc in the drivers’ championship is bound to be a disappointment, especially in parallel with the fifth of his teammate Carlos Sainz. But as we said in the report dedicated to the Spaniard, this raw result is rather cruel for the Monegasque.
Indeed, two of Sainz’s four podiums were achieved during of two races where Leclerc was simply unlucky. Thus, the different strategic bet on the two single-seaters with the arrival of the rain paid off for number 55 in Russia, with a third place, but not for his teammate, 15th at the finish.
In Hungary, where Sainz also took advantage of a disqualification of Sebastian Vettel to inherit third place, Leclerc had been eliminated in the first round by the Aston Martin F1 of Lance Stroll in distress.
We will obviously set aside Monaco, where Leclerc’s retirement is attributable to his exit from the track the day before when he had taken pole position. In Abu Dhabi, his strategy is not the best either (two saves against one), and Sainz signs his fourth podium.
But Leclerc’s season is however, on the length , higher than that of Sainz. Yes, the Spaniard was quickly at, or close to, his team-mate, but the result is quite clear in favor of the Monegasque with a 14-6 in the race and a 14-8 in qualifying.
Difficult, with such a difference, to place Sainz in front, even if we chose to place him close behind the other Ferrari. As said in his own report, the Spaniard had an excellent 2021 season, without a doubt.
Leclerc also displays very good consistency with 18 points finishes. The four he misses are Monaco, by his fault, Le Castellet, where the SF21 was absent, Hungary, where he got hit, and Sochi, where he inherited a bad strategy.
And in these 18 finishes in the points, ten were in the top 10, despite the presence of only one podium. Therefore, we can not blame him for his abandonments, nor any lack of regularity.
The only criticism that can be made of Leclerc’s season is that he did not take advantage of the chaotic races to sign a podium. This also includes his accident in Monaco, where he takes away a very good podium opportunity with his exit from the track. For the rest, the Monegasque was rather flawless.
