Singapore bakery recalls durian mooncakes linked to stomach flu

A wholesale baker has been forced to stop selling durian mooncakes after 23 customers suffered a stomach flu.

The Mdm Ling Bakery, which operates out of Ang Mo Kio, was ordered to halt the sale of Mao Shan Wang snowskin mooncakes and recall those already distributed or sold after people took ill, food and health authorities investigating the matter said this morning. One person was taken to hospital and has since been discharged while others sought outpatient treatment, self-medicated, or recovered on their own, they added.

The bakery issued a public apology to its more than 10,000 social media followers soon after the announcement was made by the Singapore Food Agency and the Health Ministry.

“We would like to extend our sincere apologies to our customers and friends who are affected by the product recall of our durian snowskin mooncakes. We take responsibility for the food items that we import and have been in close liaison with our production partner on this matter,” the statement said, adding that it was cooperating with the authorities.

It did not disclose the number of mooncakes being recalled.

The snowskin mooncakes, made with glutinous rice and the popular durian type, were imported from Malaysia, according to authorities. Those who bought them are discouraged from eating the mooncakes.

Singapore and much of the region last week welcomed mid-autumn festivities. They are usually celebrated by eating the traditional dessert, gathering with family, and lantern walking.
