Skansen i Stockholm har killed his four wolf males.
Instead of having wolves, the zoo wants to review the possibility of keeping mountain foxes.
– I want to say that it has been a very difficult decision, says Yvonne Nordlind, communications manager at Skansen to Aftonbladet.
The four wolves kept at Skansen in Stockholm were killed on Wednesday morning. The decision came after a discussion that took place for many years, and which resulted in a decision to stop keeping the animal.
– That’s right, it happened in day but there has been a discussion over the past five years about a change in the zoo’s work, says Yvonne Nordlind, communications manager at Skansen to TT.
The zoo wants change direction more towards species conservation and biodiversity. They are investigating the possibilities of keeping mountain foxes instead.
“Very difficult decision”
That you can not have both animals is due to several reasons, according to Yvonne Nordlind. The content, however, is that it is believed that the zoo can make better use of mountain foxes.
The four wolves were 4.5 years and 1.5 years old, respectively. They were all born at Skansen.
– I want to say that it has been a very difficult decision. This is not a black or white issue, there are many advantages and disadvantages and killing is always our last option, says Yvonne Nordlind to Aftonbladet.
The communications manager says further that several zoos both in Sweden and abroad have chosen to no longer keep wolves.
– We have investigated the possibilities of being able to relocate them but have not succeeded and that Releasing them into the wild is not an option. For us, this has been a very tough decision, but is in a direction that we need to go based on Skansen’s mission, she says to Aftonbladet.
