Sony 在 2016年的時候，推出了 Signature Series Walkman NW-WM1Z 以及 NW-WM1A，將 Sony DAP 播放器重新定義，獲得不少消費者的青睞。特別是 Signature 系列的簽名典藏款，一經上市均被搶購一空。如今，事隔 5年多，Sony 終於在今日為 2016 年所發表的 Signature 系列的 Walkman 推出後繼版本，公佈 NW-WM1ZM2 與平價版本 NW-WM1AM2 ，兩款產品在外觀的基本設計承襲前一代的風格。
值得注意的是除了屏幕增大至 5吋、取消了原有的 WM Port 改為 USB Type-C 與系統自封閉式改為 Android 以外，其核心在於內部細節的提升，並強調通過此次在細部上的改善，最終實現整體劇烈的升級，不過從日本媒體拿到的實機照片來看，兩款第二世代機種均比前身整整大了一號，並非沿用原本的框體設計。
NW-WM1ZM2 的設定內置為 256GB ROM 而 NW-WM1AM2 內置則為128GB ROM，二款產品預計在3月25日於日本推出，日本的方面建議售價分別為 40萬円(HK$26900/NT$96160)與16萬円(HK$10800/NT$38500)。
然而對於 NW-WM1ZM2 而言和 NW-WM1Z 雖同樣使用高純度銅框體，但是自身純度自99.96% 提升至 99.99% ，進一步提升高頻的清晰與低頻的能量，整個機身重量則為 490g，另外搭載 FTCAP3 大型音響級聚合物電容，其作用可用於避免瞬間降壓對音質的影響，並將機內的 KIMBER KABLE 增粗，並在焊料採用帶有黃金的焊錫，與搭配銅製的底板作為數碼與類比線路的隔離，減少接觸電阻和磁場干擾。而 NW-WM1AM2 則維持使用加工鋁框體與無氧銅底板配置，整機重 299g，據稱相較 NW-WM1ZM2 的銅質更著重延伸與通透，機內線為無氧銅。值得一提的是兩者均能原生支援 DSD 格式，有著全新的 DSEE HX 功能，所以音質對它們來說絕對不是問題，大家大可放心。
在數位線路部分， NW-WM1ZM2 與 NW-WM1AM2 均做出了調整，包括採用了數碼與類比線路最佳化的配置，並且有效的將類比線路與包括 CPU 、儲存容量等的數碼線路分離；雖然在其音訊處理線路上承襲 S-MASTER HX ，不過搭載 DSD Re-Master Engine，可將 PCM 轉換為11.2MHz 的 DSD 訊號再行處理，同時也採用具 AI 的 DSEE Ultimate Ultimate 作為音質強化技術，可將音訊強化至 32bit 192kHz ，同時時鐘也採用新開發的鍍金超低相位水晶震盪器。
在規格輸出部分， NW-WM1ZM2 與 NW-WM1AM2 皆具備它支援 32bit 384kHz與DSD 22.4MHz，具備 DESS HX 與 DSD 轉換、4.4mm 5pin 平衡、3.5mm、6.3mm。單端輸出為60mW + 60mW ( 16Ω )，平衡輸出為 250mW 與250mW ( 16Ω )
這二款產品，將由 Sony 第五代耳型職人松尾伴大創立的定制化耳機品牌 Just Ear 在稍早 Sony 公佈新一代 Signature 播放器 NW-WM1ZM2 與 NW-WM1AM2 後，隨後公佈了 XJE-MHRWM1M2 定制化耳機，標榜針對 NW-WM1ZM2 的音色進行匹配與最佳化。值得一提的是 XJE-MHRWM1M2 在日本的價格雖然為 27.5萬円，但是還需另收取 9,000円的耳膜製作費，不知道用戶們是否接受？
XJE-MHRWM1M2 承襲 Just Ear 耳機系列使用 13.5mm 動圈、單一平衡電樞的物理分頻技術，標榜是針對 NW-WM1ZM2 的聲音進行音質調整，搭配 NW-WM1ZM2 可呈現獨有的空間表現，並帶來沉穩與細膩的音色，如搭配 NW-WM1AM2 則具備速度與能量感。
相比手機、電腦，音頻相關的技術總是顯得那麼沉穩，不像其他兩個動輒就有翻天覆地的技術突破，更注重沉靜化享受。
