Super Mario Bros. Live-Action Movie’s 4K Anniversary Screening in Japan

Real-Life Super Mario Bros. in 4K

We all know that the new Super Mario Bros. movie by Nintendo and Illumination is a blockbuster success. But long before this movie, there was a live-action adaptation that quickly took the spotlight and became a cult classic.

Japan is planning to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie on 15th September 2023. There will be a re-release in theatre and it will be aired all over the country in different cinemas.

Super Mario Bros. Movie 1993

The live-action adaptation of Super Mario Bros. was released in 1993. It stands as a unique and infamous chapter in video game film adaptations. The movie featured Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. It took a bold approach by reimagining the beloved video game characters and their universe on the big screen.

Despite its notable departure from the whimsical and fantastical elements of the game, the film has garnered a cult following over the years. The movie’s unconventional take, which placed the Mario brothers in a gritty, dystopian setting, has both intrigued and puzzled audiences.

The movie didn’t find critical or commercial success upon its release. It has since become a subject of discussion and analysis. And the franchise continues to evolve with new adaptations and innovations. But the live-action movie remains a notable milestone in the broader history of video game adaptations in film.

In Japan, it was titled “Super Mario: Goddess of the Demon Empire”. You can watch it digitally or on DVD/Blu-ray release if you want to revisit this old classic.

We will surely update everyone if we hear any news regarding international screening. For now, everyone can settle with the new movie by Illumination. It has already attracted over 168 million viewers at the box office.
