Should we really introduce FIFA 22? FIFA, the best-selling annual video game of the year even if the series does not change much from year to year. Never mind, fans are still waiting for the FIFA 2022 season.
For this opus, we are really on a test of the new generation title seen that last year we were in between… A sort of transition episode like every new machine. So, we can hope for a lot of innovations in graphics and gameplay for this time. Let’s see it together…

As you will have noticed, last year we were unable to test FIFA in our pages but I can still refer to my last test: that of FIFA 20
. Why look back when we are here on a game released two years later and on the new generation of consoles? You will quickly understand as the two / three titles are very (too!) Similar.
Every year Electronic Arts gives us development trailers concerning new movements, more fluidity, etc, etc … But every year, apart from a few small ones changes, we do not feel that a few new features in the gameplay of FIFA . This 2022 opus is no exception to the rule. Well, we can admit that there has been a slight improvement in the bullet physics which shoots more towards PES (not eFootball eh… ..) and the “weight” of the players who fuse less as if he had a firecracker in his butt. Let’s say they corrected the speed of the game a bit.
However, if you take a team with (overrated) starlets like Mbappé or Messi , we always have the impression of running with a studded Lamborghini Aventador … whereas sometimes, they play against Peugeot 306 so there you go, complicated. I’m talking about these two players because you are clearly going to eat PSG ! Indeed, one has the impression that the game could have been called PSG Soccer 2022 instead of FIFA . They are doing too much … way too much! Even the introduction of Volta mode happens in Paris
(and which continues at Parc des Princes …)!
Well, ok, it’s nice to walk around with the bullet at the feet in the streets of Paname
as “they” call it but with all that tsoin tsoin of the dressing and the players of PSG everywhere, it is very redundant… I personally find that they could at least have made an effort to vary the look of the game to this level because we really have the impression that a Qatari prince has also bought the license.
Hyper (é) Motion
What I will especially criticize FIFA it’s a bit like every year: we are sold new features but we do not feel anything (or little) as new. And it’s the same with the famous Hyper Motion whose ears are turned back to us by trailer in trailer. But, what exactly is it? It is a so-called “revolutionary” motion capture technology allowing to realize more real animations.
Attention, the animations of the game are not catastrophic, they are even rather successful but we do not realize what really changes on the ground compared to the last opus … After, for the defensive reconversion, we see an evolution. Indeed, the team is no longer divided into two parts but returns completely to defense when necessary. It could have been a good idea except that, often, certain teams place themselves in catenaccio in Italian and it is regularly unbearable to see frustrating (at least above the difficulty Champion ).
However, what is appreciable is the responsiveness of the goalkeepers who are more on the lookout than before. Often, they give us a nice one-handed trigger that is quite impressive. Despite everything, and even if it’s a nice improvement, they still happen to commit a few balls … especially at close range. But let’s keep the positive in all this: river scores are almost a thing of the past.
Another small change, according to his inadequate speeches and some inappropriate behavior, (the unbearable) Pierre Ménès is no longer a consultant on this opus, this which is not an evil. Nevertheless, we really feel the sadness of the now solo commentator Hervé Mathoux upon entering players on the lawn… EA Sports did not consider it necessary to associate with another employee and it shows. What we will appreciate in parallel is the atmosphere of the stadiums always more faithful especially for the best known.
Volta queen
So, as I said above, the Volta Football mode is still there for fans of street football . You start with a kind of tutorial in the streets of Paris accompanied by a young lady and then it’s a bit disjointed. You will have the possibili play Volta clashes in which you must progress to pass levels (a much like FUT ) while gaining EXP, mode Volta teams which is played online , etc… but we can feel that the game pushes you to play online. The mode has the merit of existing but still does not reach, in my opinion, a real FIFA Street . As usual, a shop is also available to spend your money to customize your player. It is still the district of the show … no way to have players without a melon?
A few words about FUT or FIFA Ultimate Team which is starting to feel like a bygone fad. We are really at the beginning of the end as this game mode is running out of steam and does not really offer any new features. Worse even! We no longer know how to make evaluation matches at the start of your FUT suddenly , you come across more experienced players from the start giving you little chance of winning… IMHO it won’t be FUT most played. This is also where we will progress in stages from now on. Once a division is reached, even in the event of a losing streak, you will not go down any more.
All is not negative, fortunately, because the best mode worked for the blow is the career! This is more and more provided and now allows you to create your own team (names, coach, jerseys, stadium, emblem, etc …) to evolve in the championships that you want. More than many players have been waiting for a while. What’s more, there are a lot of possible combinations to customize your equipment. Your stadium will also be customizable, whether it is the lawn, the seats, the goals, etc. In short, almost everything even the hymn for entering the field and the music that will celebrate your goals at home. I admit, I put Kernkraft 400 from Zombie Nation . It’s been a lot sung by supporters…
“Wish” order
What is more disturbing it’s still the lack of license for Juventus , like last year but not that … This year, the Lazio , Roma and even Atalanta came to “strengthen” the Turin team in the band of non-licensees. Worse! Three teams considered rather major have been completely wiped out of FIFA 22 and these are not nothing less than 18 national selections less of which the three major ones are those of Turkey , of Cameroon and also the Uruguay who will be absent. Disappointing…
Ditto for women’s football which even loses one of the best teams: that of Japan. On the other hand, there are our Belgians (but not convinced that they are modeled correctly…)! Ah yes, I forgot to tell you that there is always women’s football … No because in the end, zero evolution for a better promotion of this game mode and it is also damaging I find.
Moreover, as regards the modeling of the players, they are necessarily recognizable (since PS2 / Xbox also…) but the more the years go by, the more the generations advance, the less I am impressed. I especially have this impression that since what … 2013-2014, there is no longer such a large graphic gap on this style of play. After, once again, the overall aspect is quite satisfactory … but I expected something else with machines such Xbox Series X or PS5 .
We do not know where the developers are going with the license since each year we say the same thing: where is really the added value of this new opus? Would the interest alone be just updating the teams? By losing more and more which is more… It becomes slightly worrying. Finally, yes and no, since the title will certainly be the best-selling video game again this year. The problem is that EA Sports gives the impression of resting there -above.

In short
Football is definitely not not at the party at the dawn of this 2021-2022 season. Certainly this FIFA 22 is not catastrophic (it’s even just a good game) either but still gives us the impression of being an “S +” edition (as for smartphones) of the previous ones. There are some minor improvements but not enough noticeable and this opus keeps too much of the faults of before. In addition, FUT and Volta run out of steam from year to year to become anecdotal … In short, one more update in the family FIFA . PS: A word of advice: forget the version Switch which is just an outright update of the first title released in 2017 on the console of Nintendo .
