The return of Saif al-Islam, son of the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, to the political arena threatens to mix cards in Libya, as it is reported that he intends to address the Libyans, in light of expectations that he may determine his position on the upcoming December 24 elections. However, it is not entirely clear whether Seif is actually considering running for the presidency, or if he only intends to support candidates affiliated with him in the House of Representatives elections.
In addition, Libyan sources expected That Abdullah Al-Lafi, Vice-President of the Libyan Presidential Council, who started a visit to Cairo yesterday, meets with Gaddafi’s supporters. And if the meeting is achieved, it will be a new indication of the rapprochement between some of the parties of the new authority in Libya and the supporters of the former regime.
It will mark the return of Saif al-Islam, whether it is crowned with success or failure in the ballot boxes. , a political achievement for this man who, since the fall of the Colonel Jamahiriya 10 years ago, has either been chased, imprisoned, or completely cut off from the outside world. Promoted by supporters of the former regime, but the extent of its seriousness is not known, it places Seif at the forefront of the contestants in the elections. Questions arise about the possibility of this from a legal point of view, including that he is wanted by the Criminal Court and sentenced to death in absentia by the Court of Appeal in Tripoli.
In the meantime, a statement by the representatives of the Libyan House of Representatives and the “state”, following their meeting in Rabat yesterday evening, called on the international community to support the electoral process in Libya. The statement did not indicate any positive convergence in the two parties’ views regarding their agreement on the presidential election law.
