The blockade that the United States has applied for more than 60 years against Cuba prevents the island from receiving income from export of vaccines against COVID-19, it was known today.
This was stated by Dr. Eduardo Martínez, president of the Business Group of the Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba (BioCubaFarma), in statements to the newspaper Granma.
In this regard, he said that in the last quarter of 2021 Cuba exported vaccines against the pandemic and other biopharmaceutical products that are made on the island to several countries.
However, the financial persecution unleashed by Washington, including the refusal of several banks to work with the Caribbean country, caused the accumulation of millionaire figures receivable, he pointed out.
The director of BioCubaFarma stressed that another consequence of the economic, commercial and financial siege against his nation results in delays in payment commitments to suppliers of raw materials, among other damages.
As a consequence, even having the financing, on multiple occasions suppliers have declined to supply us with the materials . We have proof of what we are saying, remarked Dr. Martínez.
We have done a lot to circumvent the blockade, he expressed, although he acknowledged difficulties in the production and supply of medicines, to which, together with the Ministry of Public Health, plans and measures are prepared in order to reverse such a situation.
