The Alliance of the West starts the first major infrastructure project – an express road of 119 kilometers, connecting Arad and Oradea. The completion of the works is scheduled for 2025.
In 2018, the mayors of Timisoara. Arad, Cluj and Oradea signed the first alliance of cities in Romania, called the Alliance of the West. The mayors of the four cities wanted to grow faster and attract European funds and investors more easily, in collaboration with the Government. Over time, the project remained a beautiful dream, and after the local elections in 2020 it seemed that it would disappear completely, with the change of mayors in Timisoara, Arad and Oradea.
However, not only that the Western Alliance did not succumb, but even announced the start of its first infrastructure project, albeit in a restricted form. The project – an express road between Arad and Oradea, was announced by Iustin Cionca, the president of the Arad County Council. The total length is 119 kilometers, with two lanes per direction and 75 overpasses and bridges, over watercourses and intersections with other roads.

„Starting with Monday, the topography teams from Consitrans will be in the field and the topographic works will start. In two weeks, the teams that carry out the geological studies will start their activity. We want the feasibility study to be completed by next spring. For this, it is important that the utility providers collaborate with us “, said Iustin Cionca, according to Republica.ro.
Ilie Bolojan estimated that the signing of the execution contract will take place in the spring of 2023 , and by the end of 2025 the first sections would be open to traffic.
“We estimate that by the spring of next year the feasibility study will be ready, so that in the spring of 2023 we will have a contract builder to start work. According to the designer, the execution duration will be 36 months, so by the end of 2025 we could already drive on some structures on the Oradea – Arad expressway “, announced to the president of the Bihor County Council.
Iustin Cionca he also mentioned another project of the Western Alliance, in the railway field.
“Another consistent project, this time on the railway: the modernization of the Arad-Timișoara railway. It is a project of 800 million euros from European funds in which expropriations are already being made for the new route in Arad, Șagu, Vinga and Vladimirescu. The cumulative value of the two projects is about 2.2 billion euros, to which are added another 1.2 billion euros in investments in the Curtici-Arad-Săvârșin railway. All these investments are underway. None is just a statement of intent “, pointed out Iustin Cionca .
Another project in the area west, but which has even less chance of completion in the near future, is Via Carpathia , which will link the Diocese of Bihor to Romania – Oradea – Arad – Timișoara – Lugoj – Caransebeș – Herculane – Orșova – Drobeta Turnu Severin – Vînju Mare – Calafat.
