Twenty years ago, Beckham sent England to the World Cup with a great goal

Today marks exactly 20 years since one of the most memorable goals in the history of the English national team.

On October 6, 2001, David Beckham scored from a great direct free kick in the 93rd minute to bring 2: 2 against Greece and qualify for the Three Lions for the World Cup. in Japan and South Korea.

The distance to the door was almost 30 meters, but Beckham performed in a great way and stuck the ball in the upper right corner to stay forever as one of the best performers of static provisions.

Just a year earlier, the English had smashed Germany 5-1 in the middle of Munich after a hat-trick by Michael Owen and before the last matches they held fate in their own hands, as they needed from the same or better score than Germany to qualify. The Bundestim made 0: 0 against Finland, while in Manchester things did not go according to plan and the Greeks led almost to the end.

“I remember it was terribly noisy, but the concern among the fans was serious. Just before the performance, however, it became very quiet. After I fired, I heard their reaction. This certainly remains one of the most special moments in my career. Such a goal at Old Trafford was wonderful for her. I still get chills when I talk about naked or watch it, ”Beckham recalls.

“Every athlete wants to experience something like this. It was terribly emotional and that’s when I realized that all the effort and work was worth it. In addition, this goal was a redemption for what happened at the World Cup in 1998. After this goal, my fans forgave me “, adds the 46-year-old Englishman, who 3 years earlier was expelled in the 1/8 finals after a provocation by Diego Simeone.

Beckham is third in England with 115, scoring 17 goals and 129 career goals throughout his career. This goal against Greece, however, is certainly one of his greatest performances, ranking next to a goal from the center against West Ham.
