Ferrari had a reassuring weekend in Austria, with two podiums in two days for the team. But its director, Frédéric Vasseur, recognizes that the delay on Red Bull is colossal, and the team now wants to understand how to progress to get back on the leading team.
“We try to understand our weaknesses, where we sinned over the weekend, where we have room for improvement. I think there are some everywhere but there are certain points where we are weaker than others and we have to work on it” Vasseur said.
“But there is inertia in F1 on development, we know what will happen in the next races. But it is never in these circumstances that there is something wrong, there is a set things on which we must improve. But I think that even at Red Bull, dominant as they are, there is this desire to do better the following week.
Brought to identify the areas in which Red Bull dominates Ferrari, the Frenchman believes that there is not a single area in particular. According to him, it’s a combination of things that make Red Bull dominate, or at least Max Verstappen, but he also sees his team coming back in terms of performance.
“I think they don’t have a particular strength. I think it’s all over the place. They probably do a better job with the tyres, they have better aero loading, better use of DRS, so there you go. Red Bull are trying to do better everywhere for next week and the challenge is high because there is a real gap with them, or at least with Max.”
“We are in the right direction, if you compare with the start of the season, in the third race Max was able to win a lap ahead of almost everyone, and before his last stop here he had no only 20 seconds ahead. We’ve probably done two-thirds of the job, the last one won’t be easy but we’re in the right direction.”
