In a millimetrically calculated operation, the Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation and a component of the National Army, with the support of the Video Surveillance System of the Mayor’s Office of Medellín, struck a forceful blow against a distribution network and sale of drugs that commit crimes in various areas of communes 5 – Castilla and 6 – Doce de Octubre, mainly in public parks and near educational institutions.
The actions were deployed in the Florencia, Santander and Doce de Octubre neighborhoods, where eight search procedures were carried out, with the same number of arrests and without taking a shot. All those captured were duly prosecuted and could be sent to jail for crimes of aggravated conspiracy and trafficking, manufacture or possession of drugs.
«They are captures of an organization that was dedicated to taking over the parks to sell drugs, to be able to get children into drugs. We are not going to let criminals take over these spaces and destroy the future and the dreams of our children. We are going to work so that the moms and dads are calm and can take the children to the parks, ”explained the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero Calle.
Among those captured is one of the identified coordinators of the band, known as “Pitbull”, who, according to the investigation, had the control of the sale of narcotics and also has a record for this same crime and theft and used different modalities to cover up the sale of drugs.
The follow-ups managed to show that the criminals used parts of the bicycles in their frames to camouflage and transport the drugs and even, the police report warns, they used pregnant women and older adults from their own families so as not to arouse suspicion. Drug packages stored in playgrounds in parks and even in sewers were also detected.
The authorities estimate that they were producing up to 200 million pesos a month, as a result of illegal sale.
To reach the captures, it was necessary an investigation articulated for several weeks and the support of the technology of the Integrated Emergency and Security System, follow-ups in the territory and video recordings that are now strong evidence of criminal actions, of the sale of drugs to minors and of their innovative distribution systems.
Medellín has achieved important blows to organized crime
The Articulated Strategy against Organized Crime has already achieved the capture of 44 leaders of Common and Organized Criminal Groups, more than 173 captures of their coordinators and 1,075 captures, in total.
Only for the crime of carrying and selling narcotics, only in 2021 3,480 people have been captured, of which 3,367 were in flagrante delicto.
Mayor Daniel Quintero also highlighted the reduction in high-impact crime rates.

Thefts from businesses during September decreased by 29% and from homes by 2% compared to the same period in 2020.
