Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the legendary science fantasy epic Dune is finally coming to HBO Max this month, whether he likes it or not (he does not).
I get why the dude is nervous. Making Dune into a film with a little more fidelity to Frank Herbert’s source novel than the visually singular but narratively, uh, let’s say flawed David Lynch version has been a lifelong dream for him, and he finally got to do it—but only halfway. The film adapts only the first half of the sprawling novel, and if it flops in theaters (and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest it might, pandemic or no; Villeneuve’s last sci-fi blockbuster was, of course, Blade Runner 2049, another costly attempt to reboot an older franchise that didn’t make nearly enough money to justify what it cost to make), he might never get to make part two. (Why didn’t Warner Bros. just let him film both parts at once, a lá The Lord of the Rings? Good question.)
All that said, you can understand why the director wants you to see his movie on the big screen. Yes, he envisioned it as an epic, and epics deserve an epic canvas, but I saw Blade Runner 2049 on an airplane seatback screen, and still found it visually and emotionally captivating. That’s not really the issue. He just wants to make his movie, which means his movie has to make money. I really hope it does, because I too want to see the rest of this
story of religious zealotry, political intrigue, and giant space worms play out the screen, however big or small it is. For that reason, I hope to see Dune in a theater. But we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, and the flick is still going to be available on streaming on the same day—Oct. 22—so watch it however you want. (Sorry, Denis.)
As if the year’s biggest sci-fi movie
