Manchester United icons Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney both agree their former team-mate Gary Neville is a perfect candidate for the Old Trafford regeneration task force.
It was announced last Friday that a team of local leaders and national experts will explore options for regenerating the area, with the development of a world-class football stadium at the heart of the project.
It is chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe and members include Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Sara Todd, Chief Executive of Trafford Council, and Neville.
During an interview at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday, we asked Rio and Wayne about their ex-captain being involved and whether they wanted the call-up!
“No, you’ve got to be a busy, busy fella to be on that and Gaz fits that perfectly,” laughed Ferdinand. In agreement, Rooney joked: “Gaz is into everything isn’t he and that’s probably above my head.”

‘IT’S AN HONOUR TO BE ASKED’
In reaction to Friday’s news, a proud Gary posted this message on Instagram: “I’m delighted to be part of a task force looking at the regeneration of Old Trafford and the surrounding area. I’ve spoken many times about the importance of creating a special place around Old Trafford.
“Obviously I’m passionate about Manchester United winning on the pitch, but I feel it’s equally important for Manchester United to win off the pitch as well.
“Manchester United should have a world-class stadium befitting of its status as the world’s greatest club and if this is achieved it will be a landmark project for the whole of Greater Manchester helping to create growth and opportunity.
“Over the last few years we’ve seen the regeneration of other stadiums both in this country and internationally that have set the standard and it’s an honour to be asked to play a small part in helping the club to deliver a best-in-class stadium and regeneration of the surrounding area and I can’t wait to get started.”
COULD THERE BE A NEW STATUE?
The plans for Old Trafford’s regeneration are clearly at an early stage and nothing has been confirmed, but it’s fair to say there is a lot of discussion about the surrounding area.
As part of those plans, MUTV presenter Sam Homewood asked Rio if there could be a statue of our all-time leading goalscorer in the future?

“Yeah I would be surprised if there isn’t one,” replied Ferdinand. “What he achieved here, what he did, what he means to the club and what he won, I would be very surprised if that isn’t a conversation when they’re discussing what they’re going to do with this stadium.
“You see some statues that have gone up for players at different clubs and Wayne surpassed a lot of what those guys have done.”
