The 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup is finally upon us.
The injury bug looks to be the biggest factor heading into this week’s group stage openers, especially for defending champion France. Superstars like Paul Pogba, N’golo Kanté, and now Karim Benzema will miss the World Cup entirely, which is quite a headache for manager Didier Deschamps. Fortunately, Les Bleus have a soft landing by having Australia as their opening-day opponent on Tuesday.
Belgium has also suffered a setback with the loss of Romelu Lukaku for at least the first two games, which is music to the ears of Canada. Obviously, the Belgians still have a stronger side and will be favored but Canada’s qualification campaign certified that they are not to be overlooked.
And of course, judgment day for the U.S. men’s national team looms. Monday’s opener against Wales and the entire USMNT campaign will be well-covered here at SBI, please be sure to check in for daily updates from Qatar.
If you need more soccer to watch, the UEFA Women’s Champions league group stage rages on this week. Olympique Lyonnais, the winner of six of the last seven UWCL titles, is on the ropes heading into Thursday’s match with Zürich. Young American phenom Catarina Macario is still on the mend from an ACL surgery and Lyon desperately needs to get to safety without her.
