Youth unemployment fell to 18.8% between September and November

Among the difficulties that the labor market in the pandemic is boosting the employability of young people as one of the oldest challenges.

According to the latest Dane figures , in the quarter between the months of September and November 2021 the situation improved for people between the ages of 14 and 28 looking for work, as the youth unemployment rate stood at 18, 8%, registering a decrease of 3.6 percentage points compared to the moving quarter September – November 2020, when it was at 22.4%.

Regarding the occupancy rate for the total number of people between 14 and 28 years of age in the reference period, it was 45.1%, presenting an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to the moving quarter between September and November 2020 (43.6%).

According to Juan Carlos Guataquí, professor at the Javeriana University, “it is possible that young people are obtaining employment, but let it be lower quality, with greater informality or lower income. It is an exchange relationship between quality and quantity”, he assured.

According to the Dane According to their occupational position, the majority of young people are employed as workers or private employees (50.4%) or self-employed (36.9%), while 1.7% are domestic employees, 4.2% day laborers or pawns, and 5.1% as an unpaid worker.

GENDER GAP

El Dane highlighted that in the quarter of reference the gender gap was reduced both in occupation and in the unemployment rate, but despite this, differences persist in the youth labor market.

“ Regarding the employment rates of young men and women, it is noteworthy that in the moving quarter September – November 2021, the employment rate (OR) of men (54.5%) was higher than the ER of women (35 .5%) by 19.0 percentage points”, indicated Dane in its bulletin on the youth labor market.

Compared to the moving quarter September – November 2020, this difference decreased by 1.5 percentage points. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate (UR) for men (14.1%) was lower than the UR for women (25.3%) by 11.2 percentage points. And according to Dane, this difference decreased 4.2 percentage points compared to the moving quarter September – November 2020.

INFORMALITY
El Dane also delivered yesterday the results of its informality report for the period September-November 2021. According to the statistical entity, the informality rate at the national level stood at 48.2%, 0.5 percentage points lower than that of the same period in 2020. In the case of informality in the main 13 cities of the country stood at 46.9%, when in 2020 it was at 47.7% in the same moving quarter.

By gender, the informality rate for male workers was 47.30%, while for women it was in 49.3% for the reference period.

In the 13 cities and metropolitan areas, the proportion of men employed who were informal was 45.8% and that of women was 48.3%.

In the case of men, there was a decrease of 1.9 percentage points compared to the same quarter of 2020, when informality in the 13 largest capitals for them was 47.7%, while in 2020 the informality rate of women in the same period it was 47.8% in these geographic domains, so in 2021 the indicator was reduced by 0.5 percentage points.

Of all the cities and metropolitan areas measured by the Dane, those with the highest proportion of informality were: Cúcuta (71.5%), Sincelejo (67.6%) and Santa Marta (65.3 %). The cities with the lowest proportion of informality were: Manizales (33.4%), Pereira (40.2%) and Medellín (41.9%).
