18 Larry David Moments That Made Him The Undisputed Master Of “Seinfeld”

He’s pretty, pretty, pretty good.

As the co-creator of Seinfeld, Larry David is hands down one of the greatest comedic forces of our time.

Not only did he write for the show, but he also made multiple memorable appearances that proved he was a master of comedy. Let’s grab our puffy shirts and Pez dispensers because we’re taking a look at the 18 best Larry David moments on Seinfeld.

In the Season 5 episode “The Lip Reader,” George gets caught at a tennis game on television eating with ice cream all over his face. Two of the sports commentators make some funny cracks when they see George, and of course David is one of the men joking about him.

Greenpeace Member

When the president of NBC becomes obsessed with Elaine, he joins Greenpeace to win her over. He is last seen at the end of the Season 4 finale riding a raft with Larry David’s character, talking about Elaine, but when the former sinks in the ocean, David swears that he’ll write to her to tell her what he did. While it’s not a particularly funny role, it was crazy to see him and Bob Balaban as members of Greenpeace.

Flaming Globes of Sigmund

In the strange subplot to the episode “The Heart Attack,” Jerry wakes up in the middle of the night and writes down a joke about a sci-fi B-movie he had watched. The film in question featured Larry David as an actor dressed in a cheap costume and going full ham as he watches his fictional planet burn. The movie itself looks terrible, but if Larry David starred in an entire film like this, I think we’d all watch it.

15.

Saddam Hussein Lookalike

In the classic “Dinner Party” episode, we see Kramer’s car has been blocked in by a double parker, who George likens to a dictator. Amazingly, the parker in question looks a lot like Saddam Hussein, but he talks to George and Kramer with a British accent voiced by David.

14.

The Carjacker

After Jerry’s car is stolen in “The Alternate Side,” he calls his car phone and ends up speaking to the thief, who is voiced by Larry David. The carjacker bluntly says that he stole Jerry’s car and that he didn’t know it was his, as if that would make it any better. And for some reason, he agrees to return the pair of gloves in the car to Kramer and not the car itself.

13.

Prison Inmate

Jerry and his friends getting sent to prison was a controversial end to the series. However, it did give us a funny stand-up routine with Jerry in the slammer. Larry David actually stars as a guy arrested for grand theft auto who threatens to cut Jerry. Fun fact, this was the same guy who stole Jerry’s car in Season 3. Small world.

12.

The Man on the Beach

When George pretends to be a marine biologist to impress his new girlfriend, they come across a crowd of people during a seaside stroll. After learning that a beached whale is dying, Larry David is heard asking, “Is anyone here a marine biologist?” It’s a simple but hilarious line that puts George in another sticky situation.

11.

Newman

Newman is arguably Seinfeld‘s best side character, one who is worthy of being the main group’s fifth member. But you may be surprised to learn that he wasn’t always played by Wayne Knight. Newman made his first appearance in Season 2, Episode 7, and though he was never seen onscreen, he was voiced by Larry David.

10.

The Man in the Cape

In the Season 6 episode “The Chinese Woman,” David stars as one of Seinfeld’s most bizarre characters: Frank Costanza’s lawyer. Sporting black shades and a matching cape, the man is a walking question mark through the entire episode. But his strangest scene comes when he saves Elaine’s friend from jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, only saying that he’s Frank Costanza’s lawyer like she’s supposed to know who he is.

9.

George Meets Steinbrenner

In the Season 5 finale, George’s decision to do the opposite of what he would normally do miraculously scores him an interview at the New York Yankees. When George meets the team’s eccentric owner, George Steinbrenner (played by David), Costanza tells him off for all the misfires he made leading the Yankees. But instead of kicking him out of the stadium, Steinbrenner inexplicably hires George on the spot.

8.

Billy Martin

When George sends Steinbrenner a birthday card signed by him and the staff, he accidentally gets one of his fellow employees fired and ends up taking his workload. As George walks out of the office, David’s character goes on another one of his rambling rants about the people he’s fired, repeatedly saying he had to let go of Billy Martin.

7.

The Hot Tub

When George is caught cursing at his foul-mouthed friends from Texas, Steinbrenner worries he’s under too much stress and suggests he use a hot tub. And so, both men sit in a hot tub together at the end of the episode, with George having a terrible time as his boss rambles on even when he’s underwater.

6.

Steinbrenner Wears Lou Gehrig’s Pants

In an effort to get fired from the Yankees, George walks into a meeting wearing Babe Ruth’s shirt and messes it up. But when Steinbrenner calls George into this office, he surprisingly praises him for his deed, talking smack about Ruth and revealing he is wearing Lou Gehrig’s pants.

5.

Steinbrenner Waits in George’s Office

In this scene, Steinbrenner walks into George’s office while he is napping beneath his desk. As he waits for Costanza, his grandkids come in and make George’s situation worse until Jerry calls in a bomb threat. Though the laughs reach their peak when Steinbrenner hides with the kids under the desk, what really takes the cake is him trying to figure out the name of Pat Benatar’s song “Heartbreaker,” hilariously messing up the lyrics each time he sings it.

4.

The Calzone

In another classic Steinbrenner episode, the Yankees owner gets hooked on George’s calzones from Paisano’s. Eventually, George gets banned from the restaurant and can longer get Steinbrenner his favorite food. But when Kramer leaves his calzone-scented jacket in his office, big Stein catches the smell and goes on the hunt for it like a drug addict jonesing for his next hit.

3.

Steinbrenner Meets the Costanzas

After George’s car is found wrecked and bloodied in the Yankees parking lot, Mr. Steinbrenner presumes him to be dead. He visits his parents to break the bad news to them, but while his mother, Estelle, is upset about her son, his father, Frank, hilariously asks why Steinbrenner traded away Jay Buhner. While Frank steals the show in this scene, it’s still funny to hear Steinbrenner pivot to talk about Ken Phelps.

2.

Disarming the Bomb

After Jerry calls in a bomb threat to get George out of a tough spot, Steinbrenner is put on high alert. Thus, when he hears an alarm clock inside George’s desk, he panics and brings in a bomb-disarming robot. From there, he mistakes a statue of Godzilla for Mothra, makes a hilarious crack at George after finding adult material in his desk, and has said desk destroyed with a chainsaw.

Steinbrenner Has George Committed

When Mr. Wilhem assigns George to finish a report he knows nothing about, the former ends up doing it himself and forgetting about it while he was off his meds. But after Steinbrenner reads the report thinking George had done it, he is so disturbed that he has George sent to a psychiatric hospital. It’s a bizarre plot with a bizarre ending that is only amplified by Larry David’s wacky character, especially with that story concerning Steinbrenner’s brother-in-law.
