From Sunday in Afghanis cheap, it is forbidden to travel by women without the assistance of close male relatives for a distance longer than 72 km. Transport companies and private hauliers will be punished if they break this ban. Women are not allowed to travel without the hijab.
Presenting new recommendations, the spokesman of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Violence, Sadeq Akif Muhajir, indicated that the wording adopted in the regulations: “if they are not accompanied by (women) close relatives”, applies only to men.
As explained by Sadeq Akif Muhajir, women whose heads are not covered with a traditional headscarf are not allowed to use from means of transport. In the latter, regardless of whether they are public or private, it is forbidden to play music from Sunday.
The AFP agency notes that so far the ministry promoting virtue and fighting vice has not specified what can be considered a hijab. In many provinces, women simply wear headscarves, but some Integrists understand that they should also cover their face and wear a Muslim burqa.
New recommendations regarding the situation of women in Afghanistan were announced just weeks after the implementation of the rule that TV channels should not show any fictional films, including sitcoms featuring actresses. Television presenters were also ordered to wear hijabs.
After years of relatively liberal use by Afghan women, once the Taliban took power again in August 2021, once again enjoyed only men, Afghanistan is completing the process of gradual exclusion of women from the public sphere, writes AFP.
The Taliban has already banned women from participating in sports and stadiums. They also forbade girls from attending schools. However, this is not an order enforced with the same stringency in all parts of the country.
After the month of the decree on the observance of women’s rights, which was intended to win the favor of the West by the Taliban, there is not a word about the right of women to education, writes AFP. It also does not mention their employment in the public service, although the situation is developmental, because Afghanistan urgently needs international aid, and most donors make it conditional on respecting women’s rights, adds the agency in a comment.
So far, women previously employed in the Taliban administration have been ordered not to return to work until the government has drawn up a “new plan”. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs was abolished and replaced with the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue, which existed under the Taliban rule in the 1990s
Taliban leaders have emphasized on several occasions that courts in Afghanistan have been ordered to treat women fairly, especially widows seeking inheritance. The Taliban also say they have asked government ministers to spread awareness of women’s rights in society. In turn, behind the restrictions on work and education, according to the Taliban, is the protection of women. (PAP)
