Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow star Chris Gascoyne’s unlikely friendship with Hollywood star

Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne is best known for his role of Peter Barlow on the cobbles, having first joined the show back in 2000. However, after 23 years on the soap, the 55 year old recently revealed that he’d be taking a step back from his time on the show.

Instead, Chris is swapping the soap world for the theatre world and he is set to play Captain Hook in the stage show of Peter Pan later this year. His new role was announced by the Alban Arena in Saint Albans in July and fans will be able to see the soap star between December 8-31.

But in addition to the new career path, Chris’ time away from the cobbles means that he could have more time to spend with his friends and family. While the Peter Barlow actor rarely shares pictures from his life off-screen, in the past he has given fans a peek of what he gets up to away from the spotlight.

In fact, back in May 2019 Chris took to Instagram where he shared a black and white snap of himself alongside Hollywood icon Johnny Depp.

In the photo, Chris could be seen holding a cigarette in his mouth while he stood next to and pointed at the Pirates of the Caribbean star who wore a wide-brimmed hat and a series of layered necklaces.

While it’s not clear what brought the pair together, Chris’ followers couldn’t get enough of the unlikely duo and flooded the comments section with messages of disbelief. “Ok this pictures Rocks!!!,” wrote one Instagram user. “My new favourite photo!!!,” added another.

Meanwhile, one fan used the picture as an opportunity to discuss the possibility of Johnny starring on the soap. “Brilliant!! Get Johnny Depp on Corrie for a guest appearance!! Love this picture,” they wrote.

60 year old Johnny isn’t Chris’ only famous connection, however. The former Coronation Star is married to Emmerdale actress Caroline Harding, who has had various guest roles on the soap over the years, including as Dr Garrett.

The pair said ‘I do’ in 2003 and are the parents to daughter Belle. Chris is also the stepfather to Caroline’s two other children from a previous relationship, Freddie and Pip.

In an interview in 2010, Corrie star Chris said : “If someone had said to me in my 20s that I’d have dated a divorced mum with kids, I would have said ‘no way’.

“But it kind of made me feel closer to her. It was a very real relationship very quickly. I saw this amazing strength in her and I loved her kids Freddie and Pip.”
