Lately, filling up our car deposit has been a huge pain in the wallet, especially in 2022, since in three weeks of ‘new year’, we are already in three new increases in the price per liter of gasoline and diesel. What is clear is due to the fact that the raw material (Petroleum) is once again going through a phase of uncontrolled ascent.
Having said that, Portugal is now in the Top 5, in the table of European Union countries with the most expensive fuels, which of course is largely due to the amount of taxes we have on each liter of this essential product.
This is exactly why a lot of good people cross the border and go to Spain to get fuel. But… Did you know that Gasoline in Portugal, without tax, is (usually) cheaper than Gasoline, without tax, in Spain?

Therefore, the weight of taxes on the final price of Gasoline and Diesel, in Portugal, is between 54 and 59% (data from November 2021, provided by ERSE) . Which apparently, according to the price bulletin UE-27 the most recent of the entity, makes Portugal fifth in the countries with prices highest, in the European Union.
Still, as you can see in the image in a coma, despite the madness of ‘going to Spain ‘, the truth is that without taxes, Portugal even has the cheapest Gasoline per liter (€1,457 vs €1,337), with Diesel being slightly more expensive (€0,671 vs €0,669).
In short, the tax burden ends up making all the difference at the end of the day.
Could it be that, especially now that oil is rising again, there is no room for a tax move? At this rate, it won’t be long before we’ll be paying €2 per liter of gasoline 95.
