This is our Fairphone 4 review

The Fairphone 4 is the latest smartphone from the Dutch company and will soon be available for a suggested retail price from 579 euros. Android Planet has been able to test the device for a good week and in this Fairphone 4 review you can read our experiences with the special smartphone . The first experience is already positive: when you open the packaging, it becomes clear that you get a five-year warranty on the device. Other smartphone brands give a two or three (Nokia) year warranty.

Repair the smartphone yourself

Fairphone hopes that you will use your smartphone as long as possible and aims itself on a lifespan of five years. Because a device can fall or otherwise be damaged during that time, the Fairphone 4 is designed in such a way that you can easily take it apart and repair parts. A philosophy that you may know from previous Fairphone devices. The back of the Fairphone 4 is even easier to remove, after which you remove the battery and take the screwdriver.

Unscrew eight screws and you can replace the screen, just to name one example. Parts such as the cameras, loudspeaker, USB-C connection and microphone can also be replaced. Fairphone sells spare parts through its website and promises to do so for a minimum of five years. to do. For a few bucks you can (easily) repair the screen yourself or take a new battery if the current one is worn out. We are big fans of this user-friendly approach and believe it is one of the main reasons for choosing a Fairphone phone over the competition. Other smartphones cannot be repaired yourself.

Larger design without headphone port

The Fairphone 4 looks luxurious with its aluminum frame and has a reliable fingerprint scanner in the on and off button (on the right side).

The modular design makes the Fairphone 4 thicker and heavier than other smartphones. A point of attention, but we do not find the device too bulky. To indicate the format of the Fairphone 4, we have it next to the OnePlus 9 Pro

laid. It has a larger screen and a larger battery, but as you can see in the photos below, it is slimmer.

A feature that is missing for the first time on a Fairphone smartphone is the headphone port. According to Fairphone, that has been removed to make the modular housing of the Fairphone 4 more water resistant. An argument we can get into. Thanks to its IP54 certification, the smartphone survives a rain shower without sustaining damage. If you want to connect your old set of earphones or headphones, you can buy a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter and connect it to the Fairphone 4.

Eye for people and the environment

The Fairphone 4 has not only been developed to last as long as possible, go, the device has also been developed as sustainably as possible. An aspect that Fairphone has been advertising with since its start in 2013 and which is making progress every year. For example, the Fairphone 4 contains even more sustainably sourced materials and the back is made of one hundred percent recycled plastic. Fairphone says it is making its supply chain more sustainable by improving the working conditions of workers. The manufacturer also promises to recycle an old smartphone for every Fairphone 4 sold.

Who wants a smartphone that takes care of people and the environment developed, it is best to take a Fairphone model for years. The Fairphone 4 raises the bar again and challenges the competition further. The competition just doesn’t do much. Apple regularly shares grades are sustainability plans, but other brands are silent about their impact on the environment.

To save the environment, you will not find a USB-C cable and charging adapter in the box of the Fairphone 4. A logical choice for this sustainable smartphone.

Specifications are ‘just good’

That the Fairphone 4 is tens of euros more expensive than the Fairphone 3 Plus from 2020, This is mainly because Fairphone has opted for significantly better specifications. From more working and storage memory to a faster processor and new features such as 5G

and e-SIM: the Fairphone 4 is full of improvements. In practice, the Fairphone 4 is a complete smartphone that can last for years in terms of specifications, which you can also expect given the sales price. It is good to note that the specifications of the device cannot keep up with the competition in all areas.

Like this the Fairphone 4 has a 6.3 inch LCD screen, where many alternative phones have a more colorful OLED display. At 60Hz, the refresh rate is also lower than usual (120Hz), making the screen less smooth.

And the Snapdragon 750G processor used is smooth enough, but best known from the OnePlus Nord CE 5G

and Samsung Galaxy A42 5G. Devices that are hundreds of euros cheaper. Smartphones that cost the same as the Fairphone 4 are significantly faster and therefore more future-proof. Two models and fast charging

Fairphone does put a usual amount of working and storage memory in the Fairphone 4. The basic model of 579 euros has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. For 649 euros you can buy a variant with 8GB/256GB memory – recommended if you want to do as long as possible with the smartphone.

The 3905 mAh battery is not remarkably large, but with normal use it lasts a full day. Charging is done via the USB-C port and as mentioned, you have to arrange a charger yourself. It is nice that the smartphone supports fast charging. With a 30 Watt adapter, the battery can be half charged in half an hour. The remaining half takes a little longer.

Fairphone 4 review: cameras could be better

Two cameras are placed on the back of the Fairphone 4. It is a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens, supplemented with a Time-of-Flight sensor for fast focusing. The wide-angle camera has autofocus and can therefore also shoot macro photos, so from very close by.

After a week we are still not completely convinced of the photo and video quality of the Fairphone 4. We have the idea that there is more to get out of the cameras if Fairphone manages to optimize the underlying software. The manufacturer says it is indeed working on this and promises to release several software updates in the coming months that should lead to better photos and videos.

That’s good to keep in mind, but if you’re interested in a Fairphone 4, you’ll also want to know how the cameras are performing at the moment. That is why you will find below a series of photos that we shot last week on the automatic mode. In particular, the exposure and sharpness of some parts of the photo can and should be better given the price.

To demonstrate the wide field of view and quality of the wide-angle camera, we also took some pictures with the normal and wide-angle camera. You can see that series below.

Clean software gets long updates

Fairphone supplies the Fairphone 4 with Android 11 and promises to keep the smartphone ‘smooth and safe’ for five years. A nice promise that, however, does not equate to five years of updates. Because in conversation with Android Planet

, Fairphone guarantees two years of version updates, to Android 12 and 13. The company hopes to roll out Android 14 and 15 after that.

Security updates will be available every month for the first two years, according to Fairphone. And after that? The manufacturer is not yet making any statements about this. A pity, because of almost all competing smartphones it is clear until when they will receive security updates. Those updates close vulnerabilities in the Android software that have been fixed by Google and are an important factor in keeping your smartphone safe.

Big question is also how fast Fairphone can roll out version and security updates. Experiences with previous Fairphone devices show that the manufacturer almost always needs longer than major brands, so that users have to wait longer for new features and the most secure software.

Apart from the update policy, the software is very pre ttig. Fairphone hardly adjusts the Android 11 software visually, does not add useless features and does not install unnecessary apps. The software experience is reminiscent of the stock Android version of Google Pixel phones and Nokia’s Android One devices.

Conclusion Fairphone 4 review

The Fairphone 4 is the fourth smartphone from the idiosyncratic Dutch manufacturer and a clear upgrade compared to its predecessors. The device contains even more sustainably sourced raw materials, is easier to repair and has better specifications. With the Fairphone 4 you get the most durable smartphone at home, from a brand that hopes you will use the phone for five years.

Fairphone’s strategy is, in our opinion, an example for the smartphone industry, which as a whole unfortunately revolves around profit more than sustainable use and attention to people and the environment. Fairphone has shown – for years – that things can be done differently, but not everything is done right yet. For example, the manufacturer still needs weeks to months to improve the photo and video quality of the Fairphone 4, which is much needed but also strange because the smartphone will be released soon.

We also find the rather noncommittal and so far short update policy for a device with an advertised lifespan of at least five years. If Fairphone can improve on these points, the Fairphone 4 will become an even better choice.

Buy Fairphone 4

The Fairphone 4 will be available from the end of October through its own channel, but will also be available on the digital shelves at various points of sale. The suggested retail price for the 6/128GB model is 579 euros. The version with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage costs 649 euros.
