Farewell to literary historian Lóránt Kabdebó

Lóránt Kabdebó, a Hungarian literary historian, critic, and a monograph by Lőrinc Szabó, who died on Monday in the eighty-sixth year of his life, the Petőfi Literary Museum told MTI on Monday.

Kabdebó Lóránt was born in Budapest on August 9, 1936. He graduated from the Hungarian History Department of the Eötvös Loránd University in 1958. From 1958 to 1970 he worked in Miskolc as a secondary school teacher, and from 1962 to 1984 he was the columnist and deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine Napjaink. It was also depicted in cartoons as Professor Kabdebó “struggles” with emerging young writers. He obtained his doctorate in 1962 and became a candidate of literary studies in 1969.

In 1970 he became a senior professor at the Petőfi Literary Museum. He worked as a department head at the institution from 1972 to 89, and then became a scientific advisor in 1989-1991. It was here that he began his decades-long work, which resulted in a three-volume monograph by Lőrinc Szabó (The Rebellious Decade of Lőrinc Szabó, 1970; The Path and Difference, 1974; Time of Summarization, 1980) and a memoir entitled Poem and Reality. He also assisted in the publication of collection volumes and memoirs important for the history of literature. He was awarded the title of Doctor of Literary Studies in 1990.

Lóránt Kabdebó was the head of the Department of Literary History at JPTE from 1989 to 1993, and was appointed professor in 1991. He played a key role in the establishment of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Miskolc and in the establishment of the departments of Hungarian literature, history and modern philology. Between 1993 and 1997 he was the director of the Institute of Humanities of the University of Miskolc, and in 1997 he became the dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Miskolc. He was the Secretary General of the Hungarian Literary History Society in 1990-91

From 1993 to 1998 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the History of Literature. Magda Szabó expert of the Digital Literature Academy since 1998, Lőrinc Szabó expert since 1999. He founded the journal Literary Studies and the series entitled Szabó Lőrinc Booklets. Until 2005, he was the head of the Doctoral School of Literary Studies. Professor Emeritus of the University of Miskolc since 2006.

In 1997 he founded the Szabó Lőrinc Research Center, also supported by OTKA, where young researchers and doctoral students continue to explore and evaluate the Szabó Lőrinc oeuvre.

His work has been recognized with a number of prizes. In 1969 he received the Literary Prize of the City of Miskolc. His work was recognized with the Lőrinc Szabó Prize in 1989 and the Literary Prize of the Art Fund in 1990. In 1998 he received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. He received the Attila József Prize in 2012, and his work was recognized with the Middle Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2021.

Lóránt Kabdebó became an honorary citizen of Miskolc in 2021.
