Real Madrid have recovered from last week’s defeat against Getafe. The leader in the Spanish La Liga this time was clearly too strong for Valencia at home. The 4-1 victory was initiated by a jubilee goal by Karim Benzema. Real are now 8 points ahead of Sevilla, which has played two games less.
The defeat to Getafe was only the second loss for Real in the competition this season. Coach Carlo Ancelotti grumbled that his players had celebrated the Christmas holidays one day too long, but saw a different team in the Bernabéu stadium on Saturday. It took a while to score though. Valencia thanked Jasper Cillessen for that. The Dutch goalkeeper saved early in the game from a header by Eder Militao and also parried a shot from Marco Asensio.
After Luka Modric had also hit the bottom of the bar, the opening goal came from a penalty kick shortly before half time. Casemiro had been stopped by Omar Alderete. Benzema hit from 11 meters. It was his 300th goal for Real in all competitions.
After the break, Real quickly ran away via Vinícius Júnior twice. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a good save on a bet by Daniel Wass. After Gonçalo Guedes scored on behalf of Valencia from a penalty kick (in the second instance), it was Benzema who also made his 301st: 4-1.
